Where Is the Flashlight on iPhone & iPad?

You can access your iPhone flashlight in the Control Center, from the Lock Screen, or by asking Siri to turn the iPhone flashlight on or off. The LED flash in your iPhone's camera doubles as a flashlight. That means all iPhones have the flashlight feature, including older models like the iPhone 4, iPhone 5, iPhone 6, and iPhone 7, all the way up through the newest iPhones. There's also a flashlight on the iPad, iPad Pro, and iPod Touch; you can turn the flashlight on and shut off the flashlight in almost the same ways as with the iPhone. So you don't need to pay for a flashlight app; it's free!

How to Turn the Flashlight On & Off Using Siri

Asking Siri to turn the flashlight on can save you from fumbling with your iPhone in the dark. There are two methods for turning the flashlight on and off with Siri; you can either say, "Hey Siri" to access this feature or press the Side or Home button to wake Siri up. Here’s how to turn your flashlight on and off using Siri:

With “Hey Siri”

  1. To turn on flashlight, say, "Hey Siri, turn on my flashlight." or "Hey Siri, flashlight on, please."

  2. To turn it off, say, "Hey Siri, turn off the flashlight.", "Hey, Siri, turn off my flashlight.", or "Hey, Siri, shut off the flashlight."

Without Hey Siri

If you don't have Hey Siri turned on, you can still ask Siri to turn the flashlight on and off. If Hey Siri isn’t working, or you haven’t enabled Hey Siri on your iPhone, try this method instead:

  1. Press and hold the Home button or Side button and ask Siri to turn the flashlight on.

  2. Press and hold the Home button or Side button and ask Siri to turn the flashlight off.

How to Turn the Flashlight On & Off in the Control Center

You can access your flashlight from the Control Center of any iPhone or iPad Pro, but the method for getting to the Control Center differs depending on which model iPhone you have. Here’s how to turn off your iPhone’s flashlight without opening the Control Center.

Your iPhone’s camera flash and flashlight use the same bulb, so opening the Camera app turns the flashlight off.

  1. Press the Side button on any model of iPhone to access the Lock screen. On newer iPhones, you can also use Raise to Wake to access the Lock screen.
  2. From the Lock Screen, swipe left as though to access the Camera and release before reaching the halfway point.

  3. The Flashlight will turn off, and you’ll still be on the Lock Screen.

Flashlight Too Dim? Change the Flashlight’s Brightness with 3D Touch

If you have an iPhone version 6s or later, you can use 3D Touch to change the brightness of your iPhone’s flashlight. If you have an older iPhone or an XR or 11, use a long press in place of 3D Touch.

How to Change the iPhone Flashlight's Brightness:

  1. Open the Control Center.
  2. 3D Touch the Flashlight icon by pressing firmly.

  3. A segmented bar will appear on screen. Swipe up on the bar to turn up the flashlight's brightness.

AirPlay Not Working? How to Get Screen Mirroring Working (2022)

Is AirPlay not working on your TV, speaker, or another device? Learn how to use AirPlay seamlessly!

Is AirPlay not working for you? If AirPlay is not available, unable to connect, dropping out, or screen mirroring and streaming lags, here’s what to do. Here's how to fix AirPlay and screen mirroring on an iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, and Mac.

Related: How to Use AirPlay 2 from the Control Center on Your iPhone

AirPlay Not Working? The Quick Fix to Get Screen Mirroring to Work

What is AirPlay? Apple’s AirPlay feature is a screen mirroring and wireless streaming solution. It uses Wi-Fi to share audio, video, photos, and device screens. Usually, AirPlay works very well, but sometimes AirPlay won't connect. If you're wondering, "how do I get AirPlay to work again?" here's what to do. For more great streaming tutorials, check out our free Tip of the Day

Troubleshooting Steps

How Does AirPlay Work?

For AirPlay to work, your devices need to be near each other and turned on. If you are trying to AirPlay to your Apple TV, make sure it is awake and not in Sleep mode. It is impossible to enjoy AirPlay and Apple TV mirroring without the internet unless you use peer-to-peer AirPlay.

AirPlay does not support all media types, which may result in an error message that says "video format not supported." It isn't entirely clear what the AirPlay unsupported video formats are, and sometimes a quick device restart can fix it.

Do keep in mind that some streaming services such as Netflix have discontinued the ability to use AirPlay for video quality reasons. Attempting to do it anyway may result in this error message. Also, make sure you're only trying to stream from one device at a time.

The great thing about AirPlay is that you can stream various forms of media on different devices simultaneously. To learn how to use AirPlay, check out these tips. To learn more about ways to enjoy Apple TV, sign up for our free Tip of the Day newsletter.

Check for AirPlay Devices Compatibility

There seems to be some confusion about which devices are compatible with AirPlay. The first step to troubleshoot is to find out if you have an AirPlay-compatible TV, speaker, or other devices. You can learn which devices support AirPlay 2 and AirPlay on Apple’s website. AirPlay might not be working simply because the device isn’t compatible.

To quickly check that you have AirPlay on your iPhone:

  1. Open the Control Center by swiping down from the right corner on your Home screen. Swipe up from the bottom if you have an older iPhone model with a Home button.

    open the control center

  2. If you see an option for Screen Mirroring, your iPhone is AirPlay compatible.

find screen mirroring in control center

Pro Tip: You can easily enable quick iPhone-to-HomePod audio handoff. Open the Settings app, tap General, tap AirPlay & Handoff, and toggle on Transfer to HomePod.

Check for Software Updates on All Devices

It is essential to keep your Apple devices updated to help fix commonly known bugs or introduce valuable features to your device. If you experience sudden issues with AirPlay, make sure that the software on both devices is up to date.

Restart Your Apple Devices

If your devices are on and the software is updated, the next step is to do a quick restart. Performing a restart seems simplistic, but since it clears the RAM and closes any apps running on your device, it can help fix technological glitches. For step-by-step instructions on restarting your devices:

Pro tip: To restart your HomePod, just unplug it, wait for 10 seconds, and then plug it back in again.

Make Sure Bluetooth Is Working

If you suspect your Bluetooth is the issue, we have an article about how to fix Bluetooth.

Check Your Wi-Fi Networks

Although Apple says that you should make sure that your Bluetooth is on, AirPlay works over Wi-Fi. To AirPlay between devices, connect both to the same Wi-Fi network. If you notice that one of them is signed into a different network, sign out and connect to the correct one. If you have to connect manually, check our trouble shooting guide on iPhones not automatically connecting to Wi-Fi. You can also:

  1. Turn Wi-Fi off and on again.
  2. Reboot your Wi-Fi router.
  3. Check with your internet service provider to make sure that your router's firmware is up to date.

Pro tip: If you are at a friend's house and want to AirPlay from your iPhone to their TV, they can share their Wi-Fi password with you with a quick tap!

Check Your AirPlay Settings

Your settings may be preventing you from AirPlaying to your Apple TV or HomePod.

How to Enable Everyone to Use AirPlay on Your Apple TV

  1. Open the Settings app.

    Select Settings

  2. Open AirPlay and HomeKit.

    Select AirPlay and HomeKit

  3. Select Allow Access.

    Select Allow Access

  4. Choose Everyone.

    Select Everyone

Now anyone can use your Apple TV, AirPlaying on it from their iPhone or iPad! If you need a refresher on how to use AirPlay or AirPlay 2, check out these articles.

You should now understand how to AirPlay to your TV and HomePod. Now you know how to check your AirPlay TV settings and take the basic troubleshooting steps to fix any issues.
