Review: Lock Down Your Packages with BoxLock

As someone who gets a lot of packages, not just from Amazon, but also shipments that I wasn't expecting (as a gadget reviewer), I am very interested in ways to secure said packages. One such package that arrived was the BoxLock ($129) and its purpose is to help with just such concerns.

The BoxLock is a tall, high-visibility-yellow, heavy-duty, weather-resistant padlock and is also available in bundles with storage containers. The BoxLock is Wi-Fi enabled and uses a companion app. There's even a smart scanner built-in! The idea is, a delivery person from one of the major shipping firms would scan the package they are about to deliver. The BoxLock connects to the Internet over Wi-Fi, verifies that you are expecting that shipment on that particular day (to prevent someone from using an old label, perhaps from your recycling) and unlocks the padlock. The BoxLock is meant to secure an assortment of storage containers, drop boxes, etc.

If you are really concerned about the entire container being removed, you could secure it to your house with a chain, but keep in mind that most package theft is a "crime of opportunity" as BoxLock says in their FAQ. If your packages are out of site, most criminals will skip your house. Keep in mind that the lock only has a 30-60 day battery life but the app will remind you. Still, it's one more thing to remember to charge. The BoxLock requires Wi-Fi, which, if you have dead spots in your house, might be less reliable outside. If a neighbor signs for your package, and wants to bring it over, you can use the app to generate a temporary barcode to give them access.

BoxLock

Pros

  • Available in bundles with storage containers
  • Smart scanner built-in
  • Weather-resistant

Cons

  • 30–60 day battery life

  • Works with major shipping companies

Final Verdict

The BoxLock is an admirable attempt to keep packages safe and as more carriers embrace it, the better it gets.
