Apple announced the two new iPhones, along with the new iPhone Duo, at its "Surprise and Shine" event, and upgraded features include the most advanced iPhone camera system yet. The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max run on the new A20 chip, which allows for faster processing and better support for Apple Intelligence features. Battery life is also improved, with up to 36 hours on the Pro and 45 hours on the Pro Max. Other upgrades include fast charging that powers up the 18 Pro and Pro Max to 50% in 15 minutes, a revamped and more useful Dynamic Island, and an improved thermal management system that prevents overheating. iPhone 18 Pro & Pro Max Size & Colors
The iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max have the same display sizes, 6.3 and 6.9 inches, and have aluminum bodies, Ceramic Shield on front and back, and the same camera bump, or Plateau, as the 17 Pro and Pro Max. Both models feature an HDR display with ProMotion, and the same 120Hz refresh rate as the 17 Pro models.
In other words, not a lot of differences between the 17 and 18 Pros in size or materials, but if color is important to you, the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max will be available in Black, Silver, Glacier, or Burgundy. For a lot of our team, this is a big deal: We're excited at having fun new color options for the iPhone 18 Pro models.
Apple's Most Advanced iPhone Camera System Ever
The main draw of the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max is, once again, the improved camera system. All of the camera features of the iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max
The iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max will break new ground in iPhone photography, allowing users to automatically or manually adjust the aperture, controlling exposure and depth of field for each photo. The new Pro controls make your most-used camera settings easier to access and include a manual mode with white balance, four aperture sizes, shutter speed, and exposure-level checks.
Apple has also incorporated a new sensor and computational image pipeline that improves image quality and detail, allowing for better low-light photography. Photographic Styles are also improved, with refined texture and grain controls that give iPhone photographers more creative control than ever before.
I love taking pictures with my iPhone, but I'm not a professional photographer. So I asked iPhone Life's digital photography expert Rheanne Taylor what she thought. She can't wait to get her hands on the iPhone 18 Pro to try out the new photography features: "I'm really excited about the new options for manual control. The thing I love most about my fancy DSLR is how much control I have over every little detail. The iPhone isn't a DSLR by any means, but I'm really looking forward to being able to adjust shutter speed, white balance, and exposure levels. This is such a win for creative photography! The key to getting those unique shots (like light trails) is being able to control your shutter speed."
Apple's New Reference Mode
Another small but exciting new feature that Apple announced is called Apple Reference Image. This allows users to take photos in the new Reference mode, which allows others to see if edits have been made. Rheanne explains, "I'm so excited that we can now identify images generated with AI, and that we have a way to prove our own images are authentic. It's been very sad as a creative person not knowing whether an image online is real or not, or fearing that my own images (that I worked so hard to capture) will be accused of being AI-generated. This gives me a lot more hope for the future around this sort of thing!"
Better Battery Performance
If you've been wanting an iPhone with better battery life, you may want to seriously consider the iPhone 18 Pro or Pro Max. The iPhone 18 Pro offers up to 36 hours of video playback, while the Pro Max lasts a stunning 45 hours. This is a definite improvement over the iPhone 17 line, which offered up to 30 hours of video playback.
The 18 Pro and Pro Max also offer faster charging, up to 50% in 15 minutes, as opposed to 50% in 20 minutes for the 17 Pro and Pro Max; but keep in mind, the 17 and 18 Pro models can only charge at top speed when used with Apple's new 40W Dynamic Power Adapter with 60W Max.
The A20 Pro Chip
Another difference between the new iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max and the 17 versions is the upgraded chip. The iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max used Apple's A19 Pro chip, while the 18 Pros use the A20 Pro. The A20 Pro not only features 50% more memory bandwidth, but the new 6-core CPU and 7-core GPU are up to 40% faster than the A19 Pro.
The A20 Pro also speeds up on-device AI models and processing power, as well as computational photography, including "double the AI processing power of the A19 Pro," according to Apple. Apple Intelligence and the A20 Pro chip work hand-in-hand to give your iPhone 18 Pro or Pro Max the best working memory and speed it can achieve.
Thermal Management System
Last year, Apple introduced a new thermal management system that uses a vapor chamber to evenly distribute heat throughout the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max, preventing overheating. It's odd to think of water (deionized water, to be precise) cooling the inside of an iPhone, but that's the truth!
This thermal management system has been upgraded and improved for the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max. In these models, the A20 Pro chip is attached directly to the redesigned vapor chamber. The vapor chamber now has three times the surface area of the 17 Pro models. This improvement dissipates even more heat, which "improves sustained performance and enables up to a 40 percent gain over the previous generation—the highest sustained performance yet," Apple says.
