What Does Duo Do?
The iPhone Duo's unique design means you can use it both like an iPhone and like an iPad. When folded, you have a single 5.4" display. While it's a different aspect ratio, it's the same size as the iPhone 13 mini, meaning the Duo is small enough to use one-handed. You can use it just like a regular iPhone for scrolling social media, texting your friends and family, or taking phone calls.
But here's where it gets interesting: You can unfold the Duo to reveal a 7.6" display, the largest display an iPhone has ever had. For reference, the iPad mini has an 8.3" display. That's less than an inch difference in size. That means, unfolded, you can use the Duo the same way you would an iPad. It's like having two devices in one.
Just like with an iPad, when the Duo is opened up, you can use it in both landscape and portrait configurations. Use it in landscape to watch a movie or read a book with a page on each half of the screen. Rotate it into portrait view to text your friends or browse the web. Or, you can open two apps at the same time, like using an iPad with split screen. Keep watching the latest episodes of your favorite show while responding to the family group chat.
What's more, the Duo has its own stand built into the device itself. Fold it halfway and stand it up vertically to take portrait-view photos, or stand it up horizontally, like a laptop, for landscape photos. You can also fold it halfway and set it face down, and the outer display will enter Standby Mode, allowing you to use it like a bedside clock, a calendar, or a music player.
What's the Catch? About that Camera...
While the iPhone 18 Pro Max got a seriously cool upgrade to its camera thanks to a variable aperture, the iPhone Duo is noticeably lacking in that department. Its camera setup is comperable to the base iPhone 17. The iPhone Duo's rear dual cameras feature a 48 MP Fusion Ultra Wide camera and a 48 MP Fusion Main camera. The iPhone Duo's rear cameras might not get you the same level of detail as the iPhone 18, but you can be sure you'll still end up with crisp, clear photos with every shot. While the Duo's cameras can't compete with the 18 Pro, let alone the 18 Pro Max, it does have some amazing features all its own.
The new Smart Take feature allows you to stand in front of the Duo, and it will automatically take photos when it detects you posing for the camera. That means you don't have to worry about setting a timer and rushing over to get your pose right in time. Duo Preview allows you to unfold the phone while taking photos so that your subject can see how the shot is framed before the photo is even taken. For those with kids, Kid Cue can use the front display to show playful animations to catch your kids' attention and ensure they're looking at the camera when you snap a photo.
The front outer display camera is a 12 MP Center Stage camera. It's perfect for taking selfies, and the Center Stage feature ensures you can capture the exact photo you want in both landscape and portrait mode. There is also an interior camera when you open the Duo up. It's hidden under the display so you won't see it while using the phone normally, but when you open the camera or FaceTime, it will appear.
The Other Catch? The Battery...
For a premium device, you might also be disappointed in the battery life. The Duo has two batteries—one under each side of the display—so you should have no problem getting through the day on a single charge. But compared to the 45 hours of video playback of the iPhone 18 Pro Max, the Duo is lacking. On the bright side, it does support fast charging and can be charged up to 50% in just 20 minutes. Our guess is that battery life will depend greatly on how long you use its larger display each day.

That means you'll get the same performance with the Duo as you would with the Pro, whether you're editing photos and videos, playing video games, or just scrolling through social media. Who is the iPhone Duo For?
I must admit, when I first saw the Duo I felt uncertainty. It looked like a cool device, but I couldn't pinpoint how it would be better than the ordinary non-folding iPhone I'm using right now. But the more I read about it and watch hands-on videos, the more I want this device for myself. It looks great for multitasking, so it's the perfect device for a work phone or for those looking to use their iPhone for productivity.
The camera might not be as fancy as the iPhone 18 Pro, but the unique camera features of the Duo are compelling on their own. My wife and I are both shy people who hate asking strangers to take photos for us when we're out and about, so the ability to stand the phone up using the foldable display and have it snap photos automatically without a timer would be a huge bonus.
The biggest downside to the iPhone Duo is not its camera but its price tag, which starts at $1999 for only 256 GB of storage. 256 GB would have been acceptable five years ago, but these days, with the size of photos and videos continually expanding, that amount of storage can get eaten up quickly, which means you'll likely be paying more than $2000 for a higher storage tier.
So who should get this device? The iPhone Duo is perfect for the tech enthusiasts among us who can afford to get their hands on the newest technology and find all the unique ways to use it in our everyday lives. I, for one, would love to give it a try.
