What Is Auto-Lock on the iPhone & iPad?

What is Auto-Lock? Auto-Lock on an iPhone, or Sleep mode, dims the screen after a set amount of time in order to extend iPhone battery life and prevent others from accessing your unlocked iPhone. Auto-Lock activates a screen timeout after a set number of seconds or minutes unless you disable Auto-Lock. In the same way that your computer goes to sleep after a set amount of time, the iPhone, too, will dim the screen so that the battery life is conserved. If you disable Auto-Lock to get rid of your automatic screen lock time, it will cut into your battery life.

I’ve changed my iPad Auto-Lock time most often when cooking with a recipe as I need to easily be able to see the next step without covering my iPad in food. You can change Auto-Lock settings for tasks like this, and then easily change it back when you're done. However, you also have the option to turn off Auto-Lock altogether. If your iPhone keeps shutting off, use the tips below to change your iPhone or iPad's Auto-Lock time. To learn more great iPhone and iPad tips, check out our Tip of the Day newsletter.

How to Find the Apps That Drain iPhone Battery & Save Battery Life

iPhone battery draining fast? These apps might be the culprit.

This article will tell you which apps are largely responsible for iPhone battery drain and how to save your battery life. It’s well-known in the app world that if your iPhone battery life is short, it's often heavy use of Facebook draining the battery on your iPhone. Facebook Messenger use is also a common cause of iPhone battery drain. But apart from those apps, you may find yourself asking, "What is draining my iPhone battery?" or even just "Why is my iPhone battery draining so fast?" A general reason why popular apps take up battery life so fast (even when not in use) is background app refresh, which automatically updates apps even when they're not in use, so when they're opened, the most recent information is in front of you. We'll show you how to stop apps from running in the background, plus share an extra tip perfect for stopping iPhone battery drain by social media and other apps. Here’s a list of popular apps that kill battery life and, more importantly, information on how to save battery on your iPhone.

iPhone Battery Drain Culprits

Some of the most common apps that shorten your iPhone battery life are as follows:

  1. Facebook

  2. Google Chrome

  3. Twitter

  4. Google Maps

  5. Skype

But which apps drain battery life on your iPhone totally depends on the apps you use, how often, you use them, and whether or not they’re running in the background. Here are three methods for managing iPhone battery usage and preventing iPhone battery drain.

How to Check Your iPhone's Battery Usage

When it comes to saving your iPhone's battery life, the first thing to do is check which apps are draining your iPhone. To keep an eye on battery usage:

  1. Open the Settings app and tap Battery.
  2. Swipe up to reveal your list of battery usage by app.

    iphone battery drain by app

  3. You'll see the apps you use and information about how much battery each is using, plus how much time the app spends running in the background.
  4. Tap on an app to see how much on-screen time and how many minutes of background time each app uses.

How to Turn Off Background App Refresh

If it becomes clear to you that some apps are running too often in the background, you’re definitely going to want to turn off Background App Refresh. To do this:

  1. Open the Settings app and tap General
  2. Tap Background App Refresh.

  3. Tap Background App Refresh again in the menu that appears.
  4. Select Off.

This can be a big battery saver for your iPhone. If you aren't having trouble with battery drain from background app refresh but have noticed that the feature is eating up data, you can set background app refresh to happen only when your device is connected to Wi-Fi. If turning off background app refresh hasn't saved enough battery life, there is one more method to save your iPhone battery that most people don’t know about.

How to Save Battery on Your iPhone with a Home Screen Hack

This last method is particularly useful for social media apps, which, by nature, use a large amount of battery life. The Facebook app may use a lot of battery life, but you can bypass the need for that app altogether. To do this:

  1. Open the Safari app, then go to facebook.com and log in.
  2. Tap the Share icon at the bottom, center of the screen.

    facebook login from safari

  3. Scroll down and tap Add to Home Screen
  4. A screen will pop up with your account's URL. When you tap Add, the Facebook icon is added to your Home Screen for quick access to the website.

The icon added to your Home Screen will look like the Facebook app but will open a web page for browsing instead of using the energy-draining app. You can use this method for Twitter or websites you love that don’t have apps as well. I used this feature to have quick access to my own website from the Home screen and have found it to be incredibly convenient.

Unfortunately, this last method won’t work for every app. Plus, it might not be the app to blame at all, but rather your iPhone's raise to wake settings. However, turning off Background App Refresh should make a significant difference for most apps. And, if you’re still not happy about the battery usage, consider getting familiar with Apple’s stock apps instead. What three apps do you use that drain your battery the most?
