The Standing Desk Our Editor-in-Chief Wants to Steal from Me

I don’t know how I’m going to transport this thing when I’m ready to bring it home, but I am definitely going to bring this desk home. It’s generally tough to find a desk that really fits your body and height perfectly. Plus, we've all heard the phrase, "sitting is the new smoking" and millions of us are doing it everyday, with no real chance of changing that anytime soon. What’s the next best thing? The Autonomous Smart Desk 2 ($299). With the click of a button, this desk goes from sitting to standing in seconds. It’s high quality and more affordable than any other standing desk you’ll find on the market. Here’s my overall review after testing it out for a couple months.

The Autonomous Smart Desk 2 comes in two different editions: Home and Business. Autonomous sent me the Business Edition (even though I asked for the less expensive Home edition; thank you!), which includes dual motors and the ability to go from 24 inches off the ground, all the way up to 51 inches. It has a 300-pound weight capacity and five-year warranty to boot. Want more fancy features? You can upgrade your desk to include an accessories kit or AI box. And that’s only the beginning of your customization options.

I love aesthetics, so one of my favorite features of the desk is getting to choose exactly how it looks. First, you can choose the color of your desk’s legs: white, black, or gray. Then you can select the shape of the tabletop; your options vary from square and curved to wave and ergonomic. Lastly, select your tabletop finish. I chose Walnut, which looks like a darkly-stained wood. You can also choose either a black wood finish, white wood finish, light oak, or bamboo. If you live in the San Francisco or New York City area, you can also have Autonomous set your desk up, which I definitely recommend as assembly is my only complaint with this Smart Desk.

Ah yes, the worst part of buying any large piece of furniture online or from a box store: setting the damn thing up. I absolutely love this desk, but setting it up was a small nightmare. Throw some Ikea furniture at me and I got this; I’m not horrible at putting things together. But the Smart Desk 2 was a particular challenge that I quickly got frustrated with and gave up on. Luckily, resident office dad Noah Siemsen (iPhone Life COO) saved the day (three weeks later) and put it together for me. Phew!

Now that it’s up and running, I couldn’t be happier. Admittedly, I don’t use its standing capabilities nearly as often as I should. But for those antsy moments when I’m tired of sitting in my chair, being able to raise everything up helps my daily productivity flow more consistently. And that late afternoon slump (right about three in the afternoon) is usually when I find standing to be the most helpful. But even when I’m not using the Smart Desk 2 to improve my health, I’m ogling the beautiful walnut tabletop and appreciating the sleek overall design. It’s a great desk that transitions from sitting to standing and back again seamlessly...just get a handy friend to help you put it together.

  • From sitting to standing in seconds with the push of a button.
  • One of the most (if not the most) affordable Smart Desks available.
  • Beautiful design with lots of customization.

  • A pain in the ass to put together.
  • No built-in storage.

Final Verdict:

If you’re trying to sit less and stand more while you work, I highly recommend the Autonomous Smart Desk 2. Or, if you simply like the design, it’s worth the investment. Just be prepared to spend some serious time putting it together; but once you’re done, I think you’ll fall in love with it.
