Review: GameSir G5 Mobile Game Controller for iPhone

The iPhone has revolutionized gaming, but there are still genres of games that work best with a controller. And GameSir has a nice alternative to also buying a Nintendo Switch or other device. The GameSir G5 ($69.99) was originally on Kickstarter; and while I normally don't promote crowdfunded projects because of the uncertainty, the GameSir has already been funded. And as the name of the G5 suggests, they've produced almost a half dozen different models, and I was able to try the GameSir G5 with my own hands.

Speaking of my own hands, the GameSir G5 is quite comfortable in my hands and feels sturdy and steady. There are almost too many buttons but that's important for today's games where you need features like Turbo mode, etc. While there is a joystick and a diamond pad, the G5 also has a touch sensitive pad as well.

There are some other mobile game controllers on the market that leverage the internal battery to charge your phone, which would have been a nice touch given the device's 18-hour battery life. The GameSir G5 also works with a specific set of apps on iOS and Android phones, via Bluetooth, and has a foldaway grip to attach the smartphone.

  • Well built and sturdy
  • Comfortable to hold with numerous buttons and options
  • 18-hour battery life
  • Foldaway grip for smartphone
  • iOS and Android compatible

  • One more thing to charge
  • Doesn't charge phone
  • Compatible only with a specific set of apps

Final Verdict

If you want to play traditional games on a smartphone, try the GameSir G5.
