How to Add a Contact Photo on iPhone

Set iPhone contact pictures as a fun way to easily identify people who are calling and texting.

Sometimes I'll misread the name of someone calling or texting me, and having a contact picture pop up with their name on my iPhone screen helps to reduce confusion. We'll walk through how to add iPhone contact photos (or a contact emoji if you prefer this fun option to a photo). In either case, having an emoji or photo appear helps you to differentiate between contacts, so you don't talk to your cousin Ellie thinking she's your coworker Elaine.

How Do I Add an iPhone Contact Photo?

By adding iPhone contact photos, you'll be able to"see" who's calling or texting you. Read below to learn how to add iPhone contact pictures for your friends, family, and coworkers. 

  1. Open the Contacts app.

  2. You can also open the Phone app and tap Contacts

  3. Tap to select a contact.

  4. Tap Edit.

  5. Tap anywhere on the Add Photo link or photo bubble.

  6. Select the Image icon to use a picture that's saved in your Photos app.

  7. Select the Camera icon to take a photo using your device's camera.

  8. For either option, you'll be able to Move and Scale the photo to fit. Drag your finger across the screen to center the photo. 

  9. Tap Choose (or Use Photo for older iPhone versions) to finish.

  10. You can tap to select a different color gradient for the contact image.

  11. Tap Done to save your new contact image.

  12. Tap Done to save your changes to the contact.

Your set picture will now display as the contact image in Messages conversations and when this contact calls you.

How Do I Add a Photo Emoji to a Contact?

We've already covered how to turn yourself into a memoji by creating an animated version of yourself to appear as your profile photo. But what if you want to quickly set up a profile picture emoticon for another contact? In this section, we'll cover how to set up a memoji for your friends and family. 

  1. Open the Contacts app.

  2. You can also open the Phone app and tap Contacts

  3. Tap to select a contact.

  4. Tap Edit.

  5. Tap anywhere on the Add Photo link or photo bubble.

  6. Tap to select one of the memoji icons below. 

  7. Tap to set a preferred angle or expression for the memoji.

  9. Drag your finger across the screen to Move and Scale the memoji. Tap Choose when finished.

  10. Tap a preferred background color for memoji.

  11. Tap Done

  12. Tap Done to save your new memoji.

  13. Tap Done to save your changes to the contact.

Now this iPhone avatar will now display as the contact image in Messages conversations and when this contact calls you.
