New for iOS 12: How to Use a Filter on a FaceTime Call

FaceTime, the Apple live video chat app, is a fun way to connect with friends and family when hearing their voice just isn't enough. Now FaceTime is getting even better with a new filter feature in iOS 12. There are lots of filters to choose from, so you'll always find something to fit your mood: a cartoon filter, a few black and white choices, and much more. Let's get started learning how to use FaceTime filters on iPhone or iPad.

To begin:

  • Open the FaceTime app on your iPhone or iPad.
  • Choose from the list of previous calls, or tap the plus to choose the person you'd like to call.

  • Enter the number in the To field, or tap the number from the list of suggestions that appears.
  • Tap Video.

  • Tap the filters icon to the left of the red circle.
  • Tap your filter to choose, then tap x to return to the call. The person you called will be able to see and hear you while you're selecting, including all the filters you're trying out, but you won't see them until you tap the x.

  • Here's an example of how your call will appear once you've tapped the x to leave the filter choice area - looks like Sarah chose a filter, too!
  • You can get rid of the filter or choose a different one at any time by tapping the filter icon again.
