How to Add Driver's License to Apple Wallet (2022 Update)

Soon, you'll be able to add your state ID or driver's license to Apple Wallet.

How to Add Driver's License to Apple Wallet (2022 Update)

Want to add a driver's license to Apple Wallet? How about your state ID? Right now, the Apple Wallet driver's license feature is only available in Arizona, but soon Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Hawaii, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi, Ohio, Oklahoma, Puerto Rico, and Utah will join the digital driver's license and state ID program. When Can You Add Driver's License to Apple Wallet

Have you been wondering, "when can I add my driver's license to Apple Wallet?" You aren't alone! Driver's license and state ID for Apple Wallet were first announced at the 2021 WWDC and detailed in an Apple press release. Ths feature is now available in Arizona, and many other states are expected to launch soon, including Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Hawaii, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi, Ohio, Oklahoma, and Utah, along with the territory of Puerto Rico. Apple hopes to include the digital driver's license in Apple Wallet feature nationwide in the future.

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is onboard to start accepting mobile driver's licenses and state IDs in Apple Wallet at participating airports, and Apple says, "Participating states and the TSA will share more information at a later date about when support for mobile driver’s licenses and state IDs in Wallet will be available in each state, and which TSA airport security checkpoints and select lanes it will be available at first."

How to Add Driver's License to Apple Wallet

Once the digital driver's license is available in your state, you'll be able to add your driver's license or state ID to Apple Wallet the same as you would add a new credit or debit card.   1. Open the Wallet app.

  2. Tap the Add icon.

  3. Select Driver's License or State ID from the list of available cards.

  4. Your phone will then ask you to scan your ID. Place your ID on a flat, blank surface in a well lit room. When you center the front of your ID in the camera, your iPhone will automatically snap a picture.
  5. Tap Continue if you're happy with the scan, or Scan Again to try it once more.

  6. Repeat the process with the back of your ID.
  7. Tap Continue or Scan Again.

  8. Tap Continue again to move onto the identity verification process.

  9. Now you'll be asked to complete some movements in front of your iPhone's front-facing camera to verify your identity. Follow the on-screen instructions or, if you can't perform the movement, tap Accessibility Options.

  10. After completing the requisite movements, the next step is to take a selfie. Try to look like you do in your ID! Once you're done, tap Continue.

  11. Now, confirm that you're satisfied with the photos you've taken so far, and tap Continue again.
  12. Review and agree to the terms and conditions.
  13. Now your information will be sent to your state's DMV or MVD.

Once your ID is confirmed, it should be viewable and your Apple Wallet, and you can present it to the TSA at select airport terminals!

How to Use Driver's License in Apple Wallet

To present your driver's license or state ID, you'll open Apple Wallet as usual. Apple will show you a brief explanation of the information Wallet will share with TSA (or other participating agencies and organizations in the future), and you can confirm that you'd like to present your digital driver's license or state ID by double-clicking the Side button.

And that's it. Once you have your driver's license or state ID added to your Wallet, you can also add a QR code, coupon, boarding pass, and more! Your Apple Wallet is easy to pull up and use whenever you need it. You can even open Apple Wallet from your Lock Screen!
