Review: Powerful USB-C Dock from Satechi Delivers Dual 4K HDMI & More

Like a lot of iPhone users, I use a MacBook at home and also at work. And I have large-screen monitors in both places. So I'm constantly juggling USB-C adapters that can accommodate multiple HDMI ports. Usually that means two different adapters, which is a hassle to plug in, and often the computer doesn't recognize which is the left or right screen and I waste time adjusting my display settings. So I'm always on the lookout for a better docking solution. I tried the J5 model, but it uses a software trick based on AirPlay to leverage the second screen and that disables unlocking via Apple Watch. It's a pain and I gave up on it.

Satechi

Fortunately, Satechi launched a pair of powerful USB-C adapters and sent them to me to review. I think I have finally found my holy grail. First, Satechi has the Type-C Dual Multimedia Adapter ($109.99) and the Type-C Dual HDMI Adapter ($64.99). Both models deliver 4K on two HDMI ports simultaneously! And every time I plug them in, they remember which monitor is the left and right. One port supports 60Hz and the other 30Hz, so you could use the faster port for gaming.

They also have a USB-C Power Delivery port so you can power your MacBook with a single plug but you cannot use that USB-C port for data or to daisy chain another adapter. The Multimedia model adds two USB-A ports, SD and microSD card readers, and a Gigabit Ethernet port! All models have sleek aluminum in Space Grey or Silver, with black rubber accents. In order to deliver this much power, it does require MacBooks with two side-by-side USB-C ports. Specifically 2019/2018 MacBook Pro, 2018 MacBook Air, and 2018 Mac Mini. It does not support MacBook models with single USB-C port and the USB-A port will not work with Apple SuperDrive.
