How to Add Uncategorized Photos to the People Album on iPhone

* This post is part of iPhone Life's Tip of the Day newsletter. . *

Beginning with iOS 10 on the iPhone, the Photos app got a new album called People. Thanks to the iPhone's photo face recognition, you can automatically sort photos by the people in the photos. For example, my co-worker Jaime is one such person in my People album. All of the photos I have with him in them collect into the Jaime folder, which allows me to quickly and easily access those photos. However, the app isn’t able to perfectly recognize every image of people's faces in a photo, thus some photos remain uncategorized. But you can change that; here’s how to add people to the People album on iPhone.

How to Add Uncategorized Photos to the People Album on iPhone

First, we’ll use the built-in feature for easily adding additional photos of people to their folders. This will allow your iPhone to look for photos of the person that it thinks might be missing. To do this:

  • Open the Photos app on iPhone.
  • Navigate to the Album tab and select your People album.
  • Select a person who you’re pretty sure you have additional photos of, although some seem to be missing from their folder.
  • Tap on their folder and scroll down to the bottom.
  • Tap Confirm Additional Photos.

  • If there are some, it will ask if the person in the photo is the same person. Tap Yes or No until you’ve gone through the photos.
  • If there are none, it will say, "There doesn’t appear to be any additional photos of [person’s name]."

Now, what if it still didn’t find the photos of people you were trying to add?

First, it’s important you add a name to the folder for the person you’re trying to add this uncategorized photo to; otherwise, it will create a new folder (which is fine if you don’t already have a folder for that person.) We have a tip on that here.

Here’s how to add that uncategorized photo to a person’s folder in the People album:

  • Find the uncategorized photo you want to add. Tap on it.
  • Swipe up on the photo.
  • Scroll down to People. Tap on the person's face.

  • Enter their name. If they have an existing People folder, it will pop up as you type their name. Click on their folder and the photo will be added to it.
  • If they don’t have an existing People folder, type in their name. Their contact will pop up if you have one for them. Select it and tap Done and their folder will be created.

Now your iPhone will use photo face recognition to add any additional photos to that person's People album.
