How to Add an AirTag to a Second Phone

What to Know

  • An AirTag will appear in the Find My app of any device connected to the same Apple ID. This includes mutiple iPhones.
  • If you have iOS 17 or later, you can also share AirTag locations with up to five other Apple users to track group items.

The iPhone or iPad that connects to an AirTag will be its primary owner. Once connected, the AirTag will automatically appear in the Find My app for all devices logged in to the same Apple ID. This means you don't have to take any steps to add an AirTag to a second phone using the same Apple ID.

How to Add AirTag to Second Phone

As long as both iPhones are connected by the same Apple ID, there's no steps you need to take to add an AirTag to a second phone. Once an AirTag has been connected to a device, it will automatically appear in the Items tab of the Find My app for all devices linked to the same Apple ID. Remember, your Airtag will be listed as the name you assigned it (this is usually the name of the item it is connected to).

If your AirTag isn't showing up in the Find My Items tab, open the Settings app, tap your name, and make sure both devices are logged in using the same Apple ID. If the Apple ID listed beneath your name is different, update your Apple ID on one of the devices. This will also allow you to sync content across devices.

How to Share AirTag with Family & Friends

If you have two devices you want to keep under different Apple IDs (such as a work phone and personal phone), or if you want to share an AirTag with someone else, you'll need to share the AirTag's location from Find My. The iOS 17 update made it possible to share AirTags with up to five other Apple users, even those that aren't part of your Family Sharing Group. This means that you can share an AirTag that tracks your remote or the spare key to the house with other users and devices who don't share your Apple ID. You can share AirTags from FindMy; just select the AirTag you want to share and tap "Add Person" under the Share This Airtag section.

FAQ

  • How to reset AirTags? If you experience your AirTag not connecting, you can reset it. An AirTag reset is manual, requiring you to twist the cap with the Apple logo cap counterclockwise, remove the battery, put the battery back, and push until you hear a sound. You need to do this four times, then put the cap back on and try to reconnect your reset AirTag.
  • How to connect AirTags? The AirTag setup or pairing process is really easy because your iPhone or iPad will automatically give you on-screen directions to do it. Just make sure to remove the plastic tag before you start.
  • How to transfer AirTag to new phone? Once you set up an AirTag with your Apple ID, you don't need to do anything to transfer it if you get a new phone. Just set up your new iPhone as you normally would, and your AirTag will automatically show up in FindMy on your new phone.
