Frustrated with current social networks, a group of creative individuals created Ello. The app promises to always be ad free and won’t sell user data to third parties. Posts are viewed chronologically as Ello doesn’t use algorithms, allowing you to control what you see. It’s a very clean, beautiful interface focused on inspiration and positive community. It’s said to be different from any other social network out there.

Peach (Free)

Peach just recently came out, so it’s too soon to tell how well this app will catch on. However, if the hype matches the follow-through, we could have a really nice alternative to Facebook on our hands here. What makes Peach stand out from the crowd are its Magic Words which allow you to post everything from doodle to gifs with simple, one-letter commands. It’s also completely in-app and only friends or friends of friends can view your profile.

GoodReads (Free)

This one is for the book nerds. You can get personal recommendations and discover new books, keep a want-to-read list, rate and review books as well as view your friends’ reviews for books, recommend books to friends. and join reading challenges. If that doesn’t sound like tons of fun to you, then I don’t understand your life. You can also scan book barcodes to bring up the page, and recent updates to the app allows you read book samples from the book’s page.

Pinterest (Free)

Warning, Pinterest is a vortex of inspiration that will make time disappear. Pinterest has claimed its own spot in the top social networks available over the past couple years. You can ‘pin’ pictures or links to your page and share it with your followers and the public. The best part of pinterest is discovery. A beautiful picture may lead to an awesome article; there’s lots of DIY crafts and recipes to try if you’re feeling adventurous, and you can organize your different boards for various interests.

Fitocracy (Free)

"It's like Facebook but it will make you a better person: harder, faster, stronger." If joining the book nerds isn’t your thing, how about the gym rats? Fitocracy is more than just an exercise app because it helps you build community around your fitness goals. It’s also been called the RPG of the fitness world because it brings the goal-oriented challenge of Pokemon or Call of Duty to a fitness app with quests to beat for level-ups and achievements.
