How to Hide App Store, iBooks, and iTunes Purchases in Family Sharing

When using Family Sharing, some family members (like children) sometimes end up with things on their devices that others (like parents) didn’t really want to share with everyone, like when my favorite song (with explicit lyrics) popped up on my 10 year-old's iPad! In that moment, I was inspired to write a how-to for setting up your Family Sharing so you can share what you’d like, and keep hidden what you don’t. Here’s how to hide App Store, iBooks, and iTunes Purchases in Family Sharing.

Note: You'll need to use iTunes installed on a Mac or PC to hide and unhide your purchases.

To Hide Content:

  • Open iTunes and look for the Account menu at the top of the screen.

  • Click Account. If you haven’t already, click sign in and enter your Apple ID and password.

  • At the top of the iTunes window, click iTunes Store.

  • On the right side of the screen, click on Purchased.

  • On the top right side of the screen, you can choose the type of content you're looking to hide.

  • Hover over each piece of content and you'll see an X.

  • Click to hide that content.

  • After you confirm that you'd like to hide the content, it will be hidden from Family Sharing. In addition, you won't receive notifications from that content or see it on your Purchases page.

To Unhide Content:

  • Choose the Account menu from the top of the screen and click View My Account. You'll be prompted to enter your password.

  • Scroll down to iTunes in the Cloud and find Hidden Purchases.

  • Click Manage.

  • Click Unhide for any you want to make visible again in Family Sharing. You can also select Unhide All at the bottom.
