This is How to Buy Bitcoins on Your iPhone

Cryptocurrencies are officially mainstream. All the people, myself included, who didn’t think to buy Bitcoin a year ago are wishing they had. While no one knows where it will go from here, a lot of people are asking how do I buy bitcoins? Coinbase (free) is an iPhone app that makes buying bitcoins and other cryptocurrencies quite easy to do. You can buy bitcoin with your debit card and sell your bitcoin by connecting your bank account. I may not be able to explain how bitcoin works and I certainly can’t tell you whether or not it’s a good investment, but I’m here to explain how you can buy bitcoins. The best part? You don’t need a lot of money to invest in bitcoin. Coinbase offers fractional trading, which allows you to invest however much you feel comfortable with. Here’s how to buy bitcoins on your iPhone.

Buying bitcoin can feel like an overwhelming process if you’re trying to do it on your computer. A quick Google will plunge you into the world of cryptocurrencies, flooding you with information (and a lot of opinions). I saw a lot of, “don’t invest in bitcoin, this is the next big thing” articles. Let me tell you now that no one knows, so take any and all advice from the internet with a grain of salt. Do your research, and don’t invest your life savings into any stock without knowing the risk you’re taking on. Okay, now that I’ve added myself to the list of articles with an opinion you can take or leave, let’s go over how you can (pretty easily) buy bitcoins on your iPhone.

How to Buy Bitcoins on Your iPhone

  • On your iPhone, download the app Coinbase from the App Store.
  • Tap Sign Up. Enter the info it asks for and tap Sign Up again.
  • Next you’ll need to verify your email address.
  • Once you do that, select your state and tap Continue.
  • You’ve created an account with Coinbase; now you need to complete your account setup. You’ll see a green button near the top, tap it.
  • Tap Verify your phone number. Enter your phone number and tap Next.
  • Your phone will receive a text with a verification number; enter the number and tap Confirm.
  • Now tap Add a payment method.
  • Here you can choose the option you prefer. If you plan to sell your bitcoin eventually, setting up your bank account will make the selling process easy when the time comes.  But if you just want to try it out, buying bitcoin with your credit or debit card is a good option for investing small amounts. For our article, I’m going to select Bank Account.
  • Search for your bank or credit union. Once you select it, you’ll be asked to use your online bank log-in info to login within the Coinbase app; this will allow Coinbase to easily confirm and link your account.
  • Once you’ve successfully added one of the payment options, whether direct to bank or via your credit card, you’ll get to an All done screen. Tap Invest Now.
  • You are officially ready to invest in Bitcoin. Tap on Bitcoin.
  • Tap Buy.
  • You can enter the amount you want to buy in either USD or BTC (bitcoin).
  • Coinbase also has a built-in Bitcoin Wallet, which is where your bitcoin will automatically deposit to once it’s been purchased.
  • Once you’ve entered the amount you want to buy, tap Done. Then Select Buy Bitcoin.
  • Coinbase will present a Confirm buy page to show you the current BTC price, the day, your payment method, the Coinbase fee, your payment method fee, and the total. If you’re satisfied with all of that, tap Confirm buy.
  • If the exchange rate changes while you’re purchasing your bitcoin, you may get an error message. I simply waited a couple seconds and tried again, which worked.

As you can see, at the time of writing this, my twenty dollars bought me 0.00133983 worth of bitcoin, which is nearly nothing. But, I have officially bought some bitcoin and it was pretty painless. The Coinbase app is very user friendly. You can even set up price alerts so if a stock drops below a set amount, you’ll get a notification. I’ll hold onto my twenty bucks of bitcoin for now. How much that bitcoin will be worth in six months time is anybody’s guess; what do you think of the bitcoin surge? Is it a giant bubble or should people start investing immediately?
