Volunteer with Your iPhone

Now you can volunteer without ever leaving your chair by simply turning on your iPhone!  An organzation called The Extraordinaries is encouraging a new kind of social networking, Microvolunteering, to do good. (NPR's article on Microvolunteering) The premise is that you can volunteer your time anytime, anywhere, for just a few minutes as you available.  (no more excuses!)

There has been much disappointment with AT&T for not enabling tethering the iPhone to your laptop for Internet connections.

iPhone 3GS Compass Calibration

image

A number of people have reported difficulty in calibrating their 3G S Compass.

The documentation is rather vague in the procedure.  It states:

"The compass needs to be calibrated the first time you use it, and may need to be calibrated occasionally after that. iPhone alerts you whenever calibration is needed.

3G S Map Orientation from Compass

image

The iPhone 3G S documentation indicates that "The icon at the bottom of the Compass screen lets you find your current location in Maps. Maps also takes advantage of the built-in compass to show which way you’re facing."

Initially I couldn't make it work as unfortunately there is no more information presented on how to make that work!

Here's the secret.

iPhone 3GS Overheating Issue Resolution

image

I have some news that should resolve the overheating issue that has been plauging a percentage of iPhone 3GS owners since its release.

I personally have not experienced this issue, however I have a very reliable source who claims that they have solved the issue thanks to some internal knowledge of a known issue during production. It apparently has do do with a corrupt software image when the 3.0 OS was flashed onto the devices during production.

Making a Good Impression with Presenter Pro

image

We all need to make presentations -- to our bosses, to potential clients, to colleagues, to sweethearts (or hopefuls). Since we all have to tell our stories or make our cases, we might as well do the job well.

Presenter Pro from Reximedia (available now through the App Store for $4.99) promises to help us make a good impression in the eyes other people, whoever they might be. How does it do that? By reminding us of what a great presentation can be.

One Phone Charger per Person - will Apple play along?

The European Union just made a deal with mobile phone manufacturers to have only one, standard charger for future phones, and they hope to expand the standard to cameras and laptops.  Can I get an amen?

Video Blog Tips n' Tricks 101

Though not quite my regular Blog topic area of the humanities, from an educational point of view I thought a quick video Blog to help people learn some of the basic tips and tricks of the iPhone might be fun and informative. So enjoy the show.

Everything iPhone - Apps, Accessories, Reviews, Wallpapers etc | iPhone Life Magazine

The iPhone has become a benchmark for all other smartphones to compete with.  Reviews on the cases, accessories, apps, wallpapers and more are located below.  Here are a couple of Articles that showcase what we have to offer.  For eaxample, iPhone 4S by Alex Cequea (iPhone Life Magazine Editor in Chief).

In that article, Alex says that the iPhone 4S has the exact same physical form factor as the iPhone 4. However, the insides are a whole different story, and Apple tried to make that very clear. The most notable improvements are the 8MP camera with 1080p video recording, the A5 dual-core processor (same as the iPad 2), and an improved battery life (8 hours of 3G talk time, 200 hours of standby). As far as the capabilities, the new Siri Assistant feature was the highlight of the show. The Siri Assistant recognizes natural language and can answer questions such as, "What's the temperature out today?" Combined with the phone's GPS, you can say something like, "Remind me to call my wife when I get to work." The Assistant will not only know who your "wife" is, it'll also know where "work" is and pop up a reminder to "call Marcy" when you get there."

Here's another great article, The Best iPhone 4 Cases. This article goes on to explain that like its iPhone predecessors, cases have become one of the most popular ways to accessorize your cell phone. Most cell phone consumers buy a case bundled with their new phone to protect it from day one. And who can blame them? Mobile devices have become hugely valuable and expensive items; you want to protect them the best way you can. There are literally hundreds of cases on the market. Let's examine the different options available on the market to help you choose the one that's right for you.

What to know how to create your own app?  "The first step in creating an app is to understand what you want to create and how you will measure its success. Make sure the idea is well vetted and there is a solid business case behind it. There are roughly 600 new apps submitted to Apple each day—what is going to differentiate your app from the thousands that are already available and being launched each week? Here are some questions you’ll want to ask when getting your app idea..."
