We've got a lot of new titles to look at in this installment of Game Centered, so let's jump right in. This new crop of iOS games is as clear an indication as ever that iOS, and more generally speaking, touchscreen gaming, is the wave of the future when it comes to video games. The following premium-quality, triple-A titles, only serve to further blur the lines between console, PC and mobile platforms.

Implosion: Never Lose Hope ($9.99)

Game Centered: The Latest Crop of Core iOS Games are Here.

At just shy of $10, Implosion is one of the pricier iOS games you can buy in the App Store. It's an extremely polished game, with killer graphics and futuristic, hack'n'slash gameplay. At its core, Implosion is a top-down labyrinth crawler along the lines of Diablo, Eternity Warriors, or Gameloft's Dungeon Hunter series, but with a strong, story-driven sequence of events and anime/mech hi-res graphics.

Implosion is without a doubt, a high caliber game by any standards and it comes with the added benefit of not having any of the notorious, pay-to-play schemes of in-app microtransactions that so many "freemium" games employ. Yet I can't help but wonder if iOS gamers will be prepared to drop $10, on an sci-fi-meets-anime dungeon crawler, however impressive, when so many bastions of the top-down battle genre already exist for much less.

Mortal Kombat X (Free)

"Visceral" and "over the top," to use the words of the developer's description in the App Store, is apparently another way of saying "in your face gore and violence." But hey, that's one of the hallmarks of this long-running, massively successful fighting series! Mortal Kombat X brings all of your favorite fighters to iOS for the first time, while the trademark graphic violence has pretty much remained intact with this game's iDevice incarnation.

This newest chapter in the Mortal Kombat saga is an interesting hybrid between a straight up, profile-oriented fighter game, and a card-based game, with the cards that you collect awarding power-ups and various champions. Mortal Kombat X employs a tap and swipe fighting mechanism to go along with its frenetic gameplay. Whether you are a veteran Kombatant, or a rookie to one of the most intense fighting game series ever, Mortal Kombat X stands as an essential game for any fan of the fighting genre.

HALO: Spartan Strike and Spartan Assault ($5.99 each/$9.99 bundled)

Game Centered: The Latest Crop of Core iOS Games are Here.

HALO has arguably been one of the most popular franchises in video game history. Its tradition of a rich storyline combined with amazing graphics and gameplay has garnered the series a loyal and passionate fan base. For the legions of HALO lovers out there, it should be an occasion worth celebrating, now that HALO has finally made its official port to iOS. I say "should be" because I have to wonder how keen the fans of the iconic first person shooter will be about this new incarnation of their favorite game as a top down brawler.

HALO Spartan Strike and Spartan Assault are two very similar titles. Both feature cutting-edge graphics combined with a bird's-eye view of combat gameplay, as opposed to the intense, FPS action the series has become revered for. The fact of the matter is, to the casual observer there is little difference between the two games other than intricacies of story lines and slight differences in gameplay. Because of their almost identical nature, it's a little surprising to me that they were released at the same time, which would be kind of like Gameloft releasing Dungeon Hunter 4 and Dungeon Hunter 5 at the same time, instead of years apart, or if The Walking Dead game by Telltale Games only consisted of two episodes which were released side by side. Nevertheless, for any die-hard members of the HALO Nation, these new games will be irresistible and exciting additions to their app libraries.

Lost Within ($6.99)

Game Centered: The Latest Crop of Core iOS Games are Here.

Lost Within is a creepy first-person battler along the lines of the popular Silent Hill series of console games or the Dark Meadow iOS thriller. Set in the environment of an abandoned and derelict asylum, Lost Within begins (as so many great and petrifying tales do) with the eerie whisperings of a child, and from there, draws you into an horrific adventure of survival against all odds. Along the way you'll arm yourself and battle inhuman abominations intent on claiming your life as you unravel the mystery that has engulfed you.

This game is freaky, definitely not for the faint of heart. It's a game where stealth, and cunning brutality are your greatest allies. For those brave enough to embark on this tale of terror, rest assured you'll be gritting you teeth while praying you make it out alive and grateful that it's just an immersive game, and not your reality.

Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft (Free)

Game Centered: The Latest Crop of Core iOS Games are Here.

This phenomenally popular card battler has finally made its way to the iPhone. Hearthstone is an expansion of the World of Warcraft universe and has been met with great success and resounding critical acclaim. If strategic games that have an element of old-school card playing mixed with a little Dungeon and Dragons flavor are your thing, be sure to pick up this free title.

I have yet to speak with any fan of this genre who has not had rave reviews for Hearthstone. Its arrival on the iPhone is a clear indication that the big-name developers of marquee games have their eyes open and recognize that touchscreens will play an increasingly important role in the future of modern core gaming.
