A first look at iOS 5.1 -- available now

image

Even if you're not getting a new iPad or Apple TV, yesterday's Apple event is relevant to your iOS world, thanks to the release of iOS 5.1. It's not a major upgrade, but it does add a few useful new features. You can see an overview on CNET. One of the most requested new features is now available: the ability to delete individual photos in Photo Stream. Another important feature is the ability to take a quick photo without unlocking your device. This was first available in iOS 5, but wasn't always visible. Now it is.

Is AppleCare+ Worth it?

image

When you walk into the Apple store on March 16th to purchase your new iPad, are you going to get AppleCare+?

Before deciding, you should consider what you get with the purchase.

Apple offers: 90 days of complimentary phone support for your device. This means that all of the little problems that may arise, when first using your device, can be solved from the comfort of your own home.  Not all problems that arise with your new iPad will require a visit to the Apple Store or a third-party reseller.

Apple News: By the numbers

image

A few numbers of note from today's Apple event:

585,000 apps, 25 billion downloaded (as noted a few days ago.)  200,000 specifically formatted for iPad!

315 million iOS devices through 2011

62 million iOS devices in Q4 2011

15.4 million iPads in Q4 2011 (they claim HP sold 15.1 million PCs in that quarter!)

362 retail stores, 110 million visitors in Q4 2011 including the bustling Grand Central store (I was there, the day a petition was submitted to improve working conditions at Foxconn.)

100 million iCloud users - Once your data is in the iCloud, it's unlikely you'll want to leave the Apple ecosystem and have to deal with transferring your iLife!  And that my friends, is why it's free!

Bird Hunting Mania! HD App Review

image

Bird Hunting Mania! HD is one of the newest and addictive games to hit the App store.  It is filled with bright colors, enticing antics, and challenges that has made it very exciting to play.  At first it might not seem like much; but once you begin to hunt, you'll soon notice how strategic it becomes.  The concept is simple; catch as many exotic birds as you can to bring back to Earth in order to start a colony.  You are going to save the world from bird extinction; so get ready to hunt!

The EXOVault iPhone case offers protection and great character for the iPhone.  I have received several compliments and questions about my iphone while using the Exovault case.  Actually, I have had more people ask about my iPhone while in the Exovault case compared to all the other cases I have tried in the past.

Review: Retro Racing by Jamie Woodhouse

image

I’m a big fan of overhead racing games, and because I remember the days when the NES reigned supreme I can appreciate things like “old school” graphics, as long as they are done well.  Like so many genres on the App Store, however, there are enough games of this type that you have to really do something different to stand out.  Retro Racing’s biggest problem is that it really doesn’t, and beyond that it has a couple of issues that actually detract from the fun factor.  I think the game is a nice start, but it might be a little too retro even for my retro tastes.

Call My Name App Review

image

The call my name app is a great new way to not only organize your contacts so they are easy to find and use, but also find the phone number of just about anyone or any business you want.  First, when you open up the app it will have all your contacts from your phone all loaded in and easy to find.  You can use the built in search function to quickly find people by their first name or last name, which makes it a lot easier than just scrolling through like you have to on the normal phone list.

Everything iPhone - Apps, Accessories, Reviews, Wallpapers etc | iPhone Life Magazine

The iPhone has become a benchmark for all other smartphones to compete with.  Reviews on the cases, accessories, apps, wallpapers and more are located below.  Here are a couple of Articles that showcase what we have to offer.  For eaxample, iPhone 4S by Alex Cequea (iPhone Life Magazine Editor in Chief).

In that article, Alex says that the iPhone 4S has the exact same physical form factor as the iPhone 4. However, the insides are a whole different story, and Apple tried to make that very clear. The most notable improvements are the 8MP camera with 1080p video recording, the A5 dual-core processor (same as the iPad 2), and an improved battery life (8 hours of 3G talk time, 200 hours of standby). As far as the capabilities, the new Siri Assistant feature was the highlight of the show. The Siri Assistant recognizes natural language and can answer questions such as, "What's the temperature out today?" Combined with the phone's GPS, you can say something like, "Remind me to call my wife when I get to work." The Assistant will not only know who your "wife" is, it'll also know where "work" is and pop up a reminder to "call Marcy" when you get there."

Here's another great article, The Best iPhone 4 Cases. This article goes on to explain that like its iPhone predecessors, cases have become one of the most popular ways to accessorize your cell phone. Most cell phone consumers buy a case bundled with their new phone to protect it from day one. And who can blame them? Mobile devices have become hugely valuable and expensive items; you want to protect them the best way you can. There are literally hundreds of cases on the market. Let's examine the different options available on the market to help you choose the one that's right for you.

What to know how to create your own app?  "The first step in creating an app is to understand what you want to create and how you will measure its success. Make sure the idea is well vetted and there is a solid business case behind it. There are roughly 600 new apps submitted to Apple each day—what is going to differentiate your app from the thousands that are already available and being launched each week? Here are some questions you’ll want to ask when getting your app idea..."
