IK Multimedia iRig HD - Rocks CES awards!

image

I was able to rock out loud at CES on the new iRig HD connected to an iPad (also connected to their new Bluetooth speaker--the iLoud), but that's not the point of this post. You can get more great CES coverage in the next issue of iPhoneLife (so if you haven't yet subscribed, hurry), and to say IK Multimedia rocked the show is putting it mildly. No other show vendor comes close to showcasing the latest (and coolest) iOS music gadgets like these guys! The iRig HD was a Best in Show Winner at CES--more booth pix follow with a PR announcement about the new HD model...

Water Cycles for iPhone & iPad

image

The water cycles app is an entertaining game where you have to help guide the water from the mountains out to the sea using different pieces along the way.  The game gets challenging because you have to also bring the water to different towns, villages and cities to use before it finally makes its way to the sea.  Still not hard enough?  Well, when the water goes through the different cities it will get polluted, and you need to filter it to make it clean again before finally bringing it to the sea.

New version of Facebook Messenger lets you make voice calls for free

image

A newly released version of the iPhone app Facebook Messenger (free) lets you make voice calls for free. So if you're within a WiFi hotspot, you can make calls without using up your minutes. It also works via cellular data, but then you're using up your data allotment. iMore walks you through the steps of using this new feature, complete with screen shots. The confusing aspect of this feature is that you must first initiate a conversation via a regular text message. But once you've done that, you simply tap the information icon at top right. This brings up a window that shows the option for making a free call to the person. You simply tap the Free Call icon to make the call. In order to receive incoming calls via Facebook Messenger, you need to have the app running or need to have its Push Notifications enabled so that you know a call is coming in.

It only works in the U.S. and Canada, and there's no option for video calls.

The CrystalCore TiltDock could have been invented by Apple, but it wasn't

image

The CrystalCore TiltDock is the dock Apple should have invented, but it fell to Apple Core Gear to create. But they need your help! It's an IndieGogo crowdsourced project and at just $25 (plus shipping) for the first 100 backers, it's a bargain. Considering it will retail for close to $100, you should really take advantage of this offering.

App Review - SYSTEM UTIL Dashboard

image

System Util Dashboard is an app which is designed to help you better understand how your mobile device is working at any given moment.  It will provide you with detailed information about a wide range of different things going on in your device, and tips on how to improve the overall performance.  The app is set up in a very easy to understand and read format which makes this information understandable to people whether they have a lot of technical experience, or are just casual users.

The app will provide you with useful information in the following areas:

New app: Simple, elegant to-do list for iPhone

image

I've never found task apps that useful, and have generally resorted to the old technology: paper. But Finish for iPhone ($0.99), a new app out today, has changed that. It's a simple, yet very useful and handy to-do list for the iPhone. (No iPad version yet.) It has several features I like: time frames, automatically ordering your tasks according to time frame, and Focus Mode, which shows the most immediate tasks in each of the time frames.

The SunVolt Solar Panel: Charge your iDevices as Fast as with an Outlet

image

I spent 6 years living on a sailboat in the Caribbean, and during my time on the yacht, I developed a great appreciation for the Sun’s ability to keep my batteries powered up for free, wherever I happened to drop anchor.  Since my sailing days I find I'm always on the lookout for efficient ways to harness this abundant source of electrical power for personal use, especially as one who spends a great deal of my time outdoors, with my iDevices. So you can imagine how thrilled I was to learn about the SunVolt, by Gomadic.

Survey says: The Majority of Us Would Buy an Even Larger iPhone!

image

It seems that I am not alone in my interest in an even larger iPhone or, an even smaller iPad. A recent survey conducted by Change Wave reveals, among other things, that 52% of us would opt for an iPhone with a larger screen if given a chance. In fact, of those surveyed, a solid 27% would buy a smartphone over 5-inches if they could. Reliable rumors are already circulating of protoypes of a larger iPhone in the not too distant future.

More rumors of June/July iPhone 5S, low-cost iPhone

image

Apple's stock is down again today, falling below 500, and it's dragging the whole stock market down with it. Much of the decline can be attributed to the Wall Street Journal's report citing unnamed sources that demand for the iPhone 5 is weak. Yet analysts are saying, after checking with their sources in the supply chain, that demand continues to be robust. We'll likely find out the real truth next week when Apple reports their December quarter results and tells what they expect for the March quarter. In the meantime, it doesn't help sales that bloggers like me keep passing along rumors of the Next iPhone. According to AppleInsider, Apple is currently testing two prototypes of future iPhones and will begin preliminary builds of the iPhone 5S in March, suggesting that it will come to market in a June/July time frame. No doubt some people thinking of upgrading to the iPhone 5 will now, on the basis of these rumors, consider waiting until the Next Model.

Everything iPhone - Apps, Accessories, Reviews, Wallpapers etc | iPhone Life Magazine

The iPhone has become a benchmark for all other smartphones to compete with.  Reviews on the cases, accessories, apps, wallpapers and more are located below.  Here are a couple of Articles that showcase what we have to offer.  For eaxample, iPhone 4S by Alex Cequea (iPhone Life Magazine Editor in Chief).

In that article, Alex says that the iPhone 4S has the exact same physical form factor as the iPhone 4. However, the insides are a whole different story, and Apple tried to make that very clear. The most notable improvements are the 8MP camera with 1080p video recording, the A5 dual-core processor (same as the iPad 2), and an improved battery life (8 hours of 3G talk time, 200 hours of standby). As far as the capabilities, the new Siri Assistant feature was the highlight of the show. The Siri Assistant recognizes natural language and can answer questions such as, "What's the temperature out today?" Combined with the phone's GPS, you can say something like, "Remind me to call my wife when I get to work." The Assistant will not only know who your "wife" is, it'll also know where "work" is and pop up a reminder to "call Marcy" when you get there."

Here's another great article, The Best iPhone 4 Cases. This article goes on to explain that like its iPhone predecessors, cases have become one of the most popular ways to accessorize your cell phone. Most cell phone consumers buy a case bundled with their new phone to protect it from day one. And who can blame them? Mobile devices have become hugely valuable and expensive items; you want to protect them the best way you can. There are literally hundreds of cases on the market. Let's examine the different options available on the market to help you choose the one that's right for you.

What to know how to create your own app?  "The first step in creating an app is to understand what you want to create and how you will measure its success. Make sure the idea is well vetted and there is a solid business case behind it. There are roughly 600 new apps submitted to Apple each day—what is going to differentiate your app from the thousands that are already available and being launched each week? Here are some questions you’ll want to ask when getting your app idea..."
