What I played this week - Carnivores, Album Flow 2 and other gaming news!

image

Check out the Featured App Store bundles if you haven't yet. Several of the best apps you will likely find on the app store, all nicely sorted into related bins can be had thus. Last night I found myself perusing the dinosaur related app/games bundle (under Game Collections), and of course there is a 3D FPS game in there called Carnivores: Dinosaur Hunter that I couldn't resist. The game turned out to be a mere 74MB of totally cool, and immersive hunting of the prehistoric beasties, which ran just fine even on my old original iPad with it's old-school graphics! Also this week, played with the latest release of Album Flow (see previous review here), since the developer made some interesting tweaks to the new version. Album Flow brings Cover Flow to iPad (or now iPhone), in case you were wondering, but with some interesting new capabilities. More news from the gaming realm at the end--lot's to cover so let's jump in, shall we...?

Apple vs. Google: Who Will Become King of the Hill?

image

Last week Apple announced that it would be terminating its agreement to use Google Maps as the default location service for iOS. Instead, Apple is developing its own in-house application that will become standard starting this fall.

Why the change?  The mobile location service arena is the new battleground front...and it's about to get messy.

Rumor: GM to offer "Siri Eyes Free" in their Sonic and Spark

image

One of the most interesting features of iOS 6 is Siri Eyes Free. Automakers will put a button on the steering wheel of some models that will let you use Siri without touching or looking at your iPhone. If your phone is connected, you can simply touch the button on the steering wheel to talk to Siri and do a wide range of functions such as make a call, get directions, play music, access your calender, listen to and send text messages, and more. Your phone doesn't even turn on, so you won't be tempted to look at it.

FCC Calls For Re-Examination Of Cell Phone Radiation Emissions. [Breaking News]

We all take calculated risks. The adrenaline junkie takes a calculated risk when he or she BASE jumps or gracefully crosses a slackline high above the ground. The alcoholic or heroin junkie take calculated risks, namely that they won't die from liver cirrhosis or an inadvertent overdose. The junk-food junkie takes calculated risks with their diet, hoping that the genetically modified and highly processed foods don't catch up with them too soon.

5-minute video clip shows best new features of iOS 6

I’ve already posted a number of times about new features in iOS 6, but wanted to point you to CNET's useful short summary of some of the new features that give you insight into the next iPhone: Passbook, Facetime of the cell phone data network, Siri, turn-by-turn navigation, and Maps. But even better, CNET includes a 5-minute clip of Scott Forstall’s presentation that gets at the heart of iOS 6. Well worth watching.

Everything iPhone - Apps, Accessories, Reviews, Wallpapers etc | iPhone Life Magazine

The iPhone has become a benchmark for all other smartphones to compete with.  Reviews on the cases, accessories, apps, wallpapers and more are located below.  Here are a couple of Articles that showcase what we have to offer.  For eaxample, iPhone 4S by Alex Cequea (iPhone Life Magazine Editor in Chief).

In that article, Alex says that the iPhone 4S has the exact same physical form factor as the iPhone 4. However, the insides are a whole different story, and Apple tried to make that very clear. The most notable improvements are the 8MP camera with 1080p video recording, the A5 dual-core processor (same as the iPad 2), and an improved battery life (8 hours of 3G talk time, 200 hours of standby). As far as the capabilities, the new Siri Assistant feature was the highlight of the show. The Siri Assistant recognizes natural language and can answer questions such as, "What's the temperature out today?" Combined with the phone's GPS, you can say something like, "Remind me to call my wife when I get to work." The Assistant will not only know who your "wife" is, it'll also know where "work" is and pop up a reminder to "call Marcy" when you get there."

Here's another great article, The Best iPhone 4 Cases. This article goes on to explain that like its iPhone predecessors, cases have become one of the most popular ways to accessorize your cell phone. Most cell phone consumers buy a case bundled with their new phone to protect it from day one. And who can blame them? Mobile devices have become hugely valuable and expensive items; you want to protect them the best way you can. There are literally hundreds of cases on the market. Let's examine the different options available on the market to help you choose the one that's right for you.

What to know how to create your own app?  "The first step in creating an app is to understand what you want to create and how you will measure its success. Make sure the idea is well vetted and there is a solid business case behind it. There are roughly 600 new apps submitted to Apple each day—what is going to differentiate your app from the thousands that are already available and being launched each week? Here are some questions you’ll want to ask when getting your app idea..."
