Apple introduces iOS 6, available this fall

In a presenation filled with detail, Apple introduced iOS 6 today, with 200 new features. It will be available this fall for the iPhone 3GS and later, the iPad 2 and 3, and the fourth generation iPod touch. Ten of the new features were demoed, and they all look pretty exciting. The changes to Siri seem the most remarkable. You can now ask Siri specific questions related to sports (scores, stats, standings, etc.), restaurants (nearby restaurants, maps, hours, prices, reviews -- even make reservations), and movies (reviews, locations and times -- and even view the trailer right within Siri).

iOS 6 has over 200 new features, including the following: Siri will now be able to report sports scores and player stats, team rankings and more.



Apple and Microsoft Come Together in Polaris Office!

Polaris Office is a pretty unique app of its kind.  To sum it up, it allows Apple users with devices such as the iPad or iPhone to access and edit Microsoft Office documents.  Of course, it's a lot more extensive than just that; but this is why it has become one of the most popular business apps to date.  As for its cost, many people believe that the worth definitely meets its value.

Tim Cook went through the numbers. Over 60 countries represented at WWDC. Over 400 million iTunes store customers, over 650,000 apps. 225,000 specifically for the iPad. 30 billion downloaded apps and counting and over five billion dollars paid out to developers!








WWDC coverage: Mac OS Mountain Lion and iOS 6

We are here at Apple's worldwide developers conference aka WWDC and the excitement is in the air. Already, from the banners hanging in the hall we know to look for a new version of iOS, specifically iOS 6. But once inside on my way to the keynote, there were more banners introducing features like Messages for Mac OS Mountain Lion, so apple users can communicate by text messaging using all of their apple devices, and avoid carrier fees.





iPhone Life at WWDC

Another year, another WWDC but alas, this time no Steve Jobs. I'm sure it will be eventful but I'm sure it will be bittersweet this year. I'm expecting a revamp of the MacBook Pro line, but I would also like to see updates to the Mac mini and Mac Pro. A new iPhone might be premature, as we all expected one at WWDC a year ago, but it was not to be. It seems like the Fall is the cycle Apple is working from, for iPhone updates.



What I played this week - Ichi and more gaming news

This week, I review Ichi; advanced pong/puzzle game rising fast in app store popularity, and as about as simple as a game can get and still provide devilishly mind-twisting fun. Also, some important news: for those who have heard me ranting but not yet sampled the Galaxy on Fire 2 space adventure (SD version)--99 cents for a very limited time (expires June 15th, 2012) so do not tarry too overlong to snag it. In other iOS gaming news, Bank Job side-runner freebie has been released, and a new 3D racer called Bounty Racer coming this summer. I hope to review both in an upcoming WIPTW column, time permitting. Read on for the Ichi review and full game news releases...

What's bigger than an iPhone, smaller than a MacBook, and the most anticipated Apple product since the original iPhone? On January 27, at a special invitation only event at the San Francisco's Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, Steve Jobs announced Apple's new "magical, revolutionary product" -- the iPad. Meant to fill the gap between the laptop and phone, Jobs said it was "way better" than either. Let's take a look at it.

Thin, lightweight, and powerful

The iPad shares many hardware features with the iPhone, including an accelerometer, an orientation sensor to switch from portrait to landscape mode, solid-state memory, and the same 30-pin doc connector. Connectivity is also virtually the same, with wireless 802.11n WiFi and Bluetooth 2.1 EDR included on all models.

iPad runs iPhone apps!

The iPad will run a version of iPhone OS, and the new device can run virtually any app developed for the iPhone or iPod touch. Aps developed for the iPhone can run on the iPad in native resolution but is large enough to touch type on.

The larger screen not only makes familiar iPhone apps like Calendar, Mail, and Safari look stunning, it also provides screen real estate for more complex elements in the UI. For example, Calendar display a split-sreen view that describes the day's appointments on the left and shows you a color map of used time slots on the right. The split-screen view in Contacts displays you contacts list on the left and the full information for the contact you've selected on the right.

An ebook reader and more

Although not build into the iPad, Apple will offer a free app called iBooks, which will allow you to download and read books from it's new virtual bookstore. The new iBooks store will be accessed from and as easy to use as iTunes.

The ultimate media device?

The iPad is not the world's first tablet PC or the first eBook reader. Toshiba, Lenovo, Acer, and others sell Windows-based tablets, and Amazon has had considerable success with it's Kindle. But Apple thinks the iPad will reinvent the category by offering a vastly superior multi-touch interface an easy access to a wide-variety of apps and media via iTunes. Aple hopes to make the iPad the ultimate media device by leveraging it's existing assets which include over 100 million paying iTunes customers, established relationships with music and video content providers, and over 100,000 iPhone OS app developers.
