The great video quality of an iPhone 5 allows you to forego a traditional video camera, but the obvious downside is how hard it is to hold an iPhone steady. That problem is gone thanks to Tiffen's Steadicam Smoothee ($126.60 on Amazon), which now supports the iPhone 5.
I'll be the first to admit I have a few too many iPhone cases. I love change them out often, and you'll never see with me with a plain black case on my iPhone. I'm excited to share with you some of the cases I love most right now!
1. Permafrost UN Deflector by Uncommon ($39.95)
An emerging class of visual search apps are showing promise in replacing traditional search methods — with camera technology that leverages the power of the web to help you identify and learn about your surroundings. The just-released iOS visual search app, CamFind (currently free) nicely marries image analysis features with language translation and voice input/output and is threatening to relegate the practice of text-entry search to the Stone Age where it belongs!
Critical Missions: SWAT ($2.99) from Critical Force Entertainment is a killer of a combat first-person shooter, especially if your thing is stalking through virtual settings (armed to the teeth) in order to blast in-game bots (or your online buddy's bots). The game physics are quite realistic, and the 3D scenes and graphics excellent. I did not go bananas over the control aspects, but after a few test runs started getting a better hang of it. Several modes of play are available: endless singular stalking/blasting or various team matches. Critical Missions: SWAT is a single bloody-minded combat game best enjoyed with a side of Foo Fighters at extremely high volume!
But can it stand up to the most excellent Trigger Fist (Free) (reviewed previously here)? Inquiring shooters want to know... Here's how the two shake out in a side-by-side comparison!
The iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch are great music players, especially if you're using headphones, but the speaker placement in all of these devices is problematic. By directing sound straight down, it doesn't reach the user's ears as well as if the speakers were pointed forward. I've tried gadgets like SoundJaw, which uses physics to redirect audio towards the user, but that don't typically accommodate cases. Enter iPlifier, a Kickstarter project that plugs into the lightning dock. Even if your iPhone is in a typical case, the device directs audio to the user.
I recently had the opportunity to chat with Antonio Meze, the extremely talented designer of Meze ebony wood headphones. Antonio Meze is both a classic-modernist designer as well as a musician and audiophile, all of which is apparent the moment you put on a pair of his headphones. The quality of craftsmanship is simply exceptional, as is the quality of sound!
New apps and updates are coming out all the time, and this week there are some especially exciting developments. The must-have social news app Flipboard received its most significant update ever, allowing users to create and share their own magazines. Rap/Reggae icon Snoop Lion launched his new app, Snoop Lion's Reincarnated. There's also big news for gamers — The Walking Dead is on sale!
The Adventure-Proof series examines and reviews the best in rugged iOS gear, apps, and accessories to help iDevice users enjoy outdoor adventures with their mobile tech safely in tow.
The national fitness craze has hit the mobile computing world. Wahoo Fitness, a company at the forefront of the trend, has released the Balance Smartphone Scale ($99.99). Several features of the Bluetooth scale, including its automatic iOS pairing and sleek design, make it worth the purchase price.
Some games draw you in with an engaging storyline or challenging strategy; others, with the adrenaline rush of combat, or simply as a cool way to kill time. In LIBERATION MAIDEN ($4.99), game designers Level-5 went for all of the above. The graphics and anime cut scenes are amazing. The game concept is well developed, and while the storyline may at first be obscure, part of the fun is discovering the history and story as you play. LIBERATION MAIDEN works well with its eye-watering, non-stop action and a screen sprinkled with detailed widgets in and between levels.
