Which Apple TV Should You Buy?

Which Apple TV Should You Buy?

The new generation of Apple TV is officially available for pre-order today. Orders placed today are expected to ship by the end of this week, October 30. Yet, this Apple TV comes with choices. The base model will cost you $149 and includes 32 gigabytes of storage; whereas, the 64GB model will cost $199. Meanwhile, the old Apple TV is at an all time low price of $69. Which model is the best fit for you?

Which model is right for you largely depends on how you’re going to use the Apple TV. Both of the new Apple TV models include access to Apple TV apps, including standbys such as Netflix and HBO Now as well as apps for shopping and gaming. Both models include Siri-enabled remote with touchpad and universal search for finding what you want across all applications. The difference starts with size:

64GB Apple TV for $199

Storage on the Apple TV isn’t anything like that of the iPhone. Although movies and games tend to take up large chunks of data, Apple is utilizing the cloud to ensure no one app takes up too much space. For Apple TV apps, there’s a cap of 200 megabytes on size and additional storage can be used in cycles. This means you’re only downloading what you need at any given time. If you’re planning to use the Apple TV for a lot of gaming and have the desire to switch between movies and games often, it’s probably worth it to spend an extra 50 dollars.

32GB Apple TV for $149

The largest difference when dropping to the 32GB model will likely be loading time. The more storage your device can utilize, the faster it can access what’s available; however, this difference would only be felt with a large downloaded reservoir of apps and games. In all likelihood, 32GB is plenty of storage for the everyday Apple TV user. You’ll get all the awesome features including Siri commands and universal search for a little less money.

Old Apple TV for $69

If you’ve held out buying an Apple TV at all, now is definitely the time to get the best deal. The old model won’t include any of the special features the new ones do, but if streaming television is your main goal, this may still be the best option. The previous model includes a variety of streaming possibilities including Netflix, HBO Now, Hulu, and more. You won’t have Siri commands, universal search, or a fancy touchpad remote. It does include Airplay for mirroring your Apple device screens to the TV. You also won’t have access to the new TV apps being released, but for your basic watching needs, the old generation Apple TV is a great deal.
