The Ultimate Off-Grid, Waterproof, Protective iPhone 7 Case: SnowLizard's SLXtreme

I've been a fan of the SnowLizard SLXtreme ($129.99) solar-charging, waterproof, and ruggedly protective iPhone cases for many years now, going back to the company's earliest days on Kickstarter. Over the years I've called upon these protective iPhone cases for some of my most extreme outdoor and off-grid adventures, and they've never let me down.

The Ultimate Off-Grid, Waterproof iPhone Case: SnowLizard's SLXtreme

It's safe to say that for most of us, the SnowLizard SLXtreme won't be our everyday iPhone case. It's a big, hefty tank of a case; not necessarily the kind of thing you'd use on your iPhone if you were just going to a party at someone's home or to your day job or to college classes. However, for what the SnowLizard SLXtreme is designed to do, it performs exceptionally well. The SLXtreme offers reliable iPhone protection and insulation from harsh environmental conditions, and keeps your iPhone safe and secure from impact, all while delivering a steady trickle charge to your device courtesy of a high-performance solar panel built in to the case's backside.

The SLXtreme can provide a 100 percent iPhone battery boost with about 15 hours of solar charge. Its extremely efficient monocrystalline silicon solar panel can deliver enough charge in an hour of sun exposure for a 10-minute phone call. The SLXtreme protective iPhone 7 case has a built-in 4,000 mAh internal battery which stores the power it harnesses from the sun. Likewise, if you are around a wall outlet, you can simply and rapidly charge the SLXtreme's internal battery via an included micro-USB charger.

The SLXtreme is waterproof to a depth of over six feet, and it's military rated to protect your iPhone from hard falls, abrupt shocks, and compressions. If you fancy yourself the outdoorsy type or an adventurer, or if you are a sailor or someone who spends a good deal of time on, or near the water, then the SnowLizard SLXtreme is going to be a most excellent option for you.

On my last trip to the Caribbean I took the SLXtreme with me and I was so glad I did, as it not only kept my iPhone safe and insulated from the salt water and air, it also kept my iPhone powered up, even after capturing hours of underwater videography. I've also taken the SLXtreme on backcountry camping trips, where I've been able to rely on its solar charging capabilities to keep me oriented (with my location-based mapping apps) and plugged in enough to rest assured that in the event of an emergency or unforseeable circumstances, I'd be able to use my iPhone to alert someone as to my condition and whereabouts.

The Ultimate Off-Grid, Waterproof iPhone Case: SnowLizard's SLXtreme

  • Multiple case color choices, including basic black and white, as well as bright, easy-to-find colors and a basic camouflage option as well.
  • Superior rugged, waterproof, heavy-duty protection.
  • Advanced solar panel charging technology to help you rest easy when away from a wall charger.
  • Currently available in models for the iPhone 5/5S, 6/6S and iPhone 7.

  • The iPhone tends to overheat and become temporarily unusable when the case is left in the sun. Most every time I've used the SLXtreme I've had to leave the iPhone in a cool, shaded place for a bit in order to cool down enough to actually use my iPhone. An unfortunate and unavoidable consequence of leaving your iPhone in the hot sun.
  • The phone call audio quality is not great, as a result of the SLXtreme's thick case walls and overall bulky design.
  • The SLXtreme is understandably bulky and hefty, in order to deliver its superior shock/drop protection and accommodate the solar panel built into its backside. However, the SLXtreme is as a result, a large and relatively unweildly case to lug around. Some folks will be daunted by its sheer size; and it is, admittedly, not for everyone. But for those who need a case like this one for off-grid, ocean-going adventuring, the SLXtreme is hard to beat.

Final Verdict:

While I could not recommend the SnowLizerd SLXtreme for everyone, I would wholeheartedly recommend it for anyone who is a water loving, off-grid adventurer. It's one of the best cases you'll find for any longer-term, off-grid adventures or any waterside escapades.
