D.A.D. 2 Review: Smartphone-Connected Personal Safety Device

Like many dads, I sent my daughter off to college and this device is going with her. It's appropriately called the D.A.D. 2 Defense Alert Device ($129.99) and it's made by TigerLight. The D.A.D. 2 does so many things. First, it's a pepper spray device and it even comes with a sample safe spray so you can practice using it. That's a smart idea.

The D.A.D. 2 also has assorted strobe light options for safety and is water resistant. It's sold in several color choices, which might seem superficial but you want your kid to feel comfortable taking it everywhere. And if you have multiple D.A.D. 2 owners in a household or dorm room, they could identify which is theirs by color. In fact, TigerLight offers volume discounts so a sorority could order in bulk, for example.

What it really appealed to me, as a writer for iPhone Life magazine, is the D.A.D 2's smartphone integration. The free companion app, once paired via Bluetooth, can send an alert to your emergency contact at the press of a button, even if the pepper spray isn't used. The app sends your phone's GPS location to others with the D.A.D. app in a one mile radius, and to those in your app's contact list. The alert prompts the receiver to call 911 and provides directions to your location.

  • Valuable Accessory
  • Attractive color choices
  • Smartphone integration
  • Water-resistant
  • Strobe light options

  • Expensive, but volume discounts

Final Verdict

If you are a dad (or mom) worried about your kids' safety, check out the D.A.D. 2 Defense Alert Device from TigerLight.
