Review: Palmo Protective Case for iPhone and iPad

Another day, another case; Or so it seems. As in other iOS-related accessory categories, iPhone and iPad cases are so numerous and varied that it is a considerable challenge for companies to strongly differentiate their products in the marketplace. That's why when a really unique design comes along, it's worth taking notice. One such case is the Palmo for iPhone or iPad (starting at $26.99). Let's take a look at what makes it unique.

The Palmo is a minimalist silicon design that lassos itself around the corners of an iOS device while crisscrossing the back. Unlike most cases that cover the back of an iOS device, Palmo's approach leaves a considerable amount of back surface exposed (most prominently allowing the display of an iPhone or iPad's shiny Apple logo to be haloed around the Palmo's silicon wrap).

The major benefit of the exposed back is the ability to slide a finger or two between the flexible Palmo cover and the back of the iOS device. This helps secure the device from slipping as well as keeping a tight grip to prevent loss or theft.

Applying the Palmo took seconds on both the iPhone or iPad and its lightweight design added minimal weight and bulk to either device. It took a few finger flicks to slide my finger underneath, and the iPad version allowed several fingers to be sandwiched between the Palmo and the iPad. But once you've done this a few times, it's pretty easy to perform quickly.

One annoyance with the iPad version is using it with Apple's smart cover. Due to Palmo's corner wraps, the smart cover no longer lies flat against the screen. The smart cover still turns the screen on or off when lifted, but it's clumsy and has a tendency to flap open. As such, if you want to protect both front and back of your iPad, the Palmo isn't an ideal case for your needs. However, if you're looking for a lightweight, relatively inexpensive and minimalist protective case for the iPhone or iPad, the Palmo meets those criteria on all counts.
