Review: Meem Cable Backs up Your iPhone without iCloud or iTunes

Meem Cable Backs up Your iPhone without iCloud or iTunes

Backups are important. I just traded in a few iPhones in preparation of getting the next iPhone, expected to be announced on March 21. I backed them up to iCloud and to my Mac via iTunes. But there's an interesting alternative that started out as a Kickstarter. The MEEM Backup Cable ($69.99) from MEEM SL is a backup system in disguise. It looks like a USB Lightning cable that swallowed a flash drive. The cable is special because it has 32 GB of memory to backup key data from your iOS device. There is also a 16 GB version for Android.

It's expensive, but the cable itself is a quality Lightning cable. The real advantage is that it backs up contacts, calendars, photos, and videos whenever you charge. You don't need to think about it, once you've installed their free app, which is quite elegant. It supports a four-digit code for password protection and lets you decide which content to backup and restore when it comes time to do that.

Pros

  • Quality Lightning cable
  • Backs up contacts, calendars, photos and videos whenever you charge
  • Elegant app
  • Password protection
  • Lets you avoid iCloud and computer backups

Cons

  • Expensive
  • Doesn't backup app data
  • Not a full replacement for iCloud or iTunes backups

Final Verdict

If you're paranoid about the FBI being able to get in to your backups in iCloud or on your Mac or PC via iTunes, this is an alternative.  Keep in mind that it does not back up app data such as Word, Keynote, Excel, and other documents so it probably isn't a full replacement for iCloud or iTunes backups.
