Review: Lightning Power Cord Does Double Duty for Charging and Data Sync

I recently learned of the Jewel 2-in-1 Lightning Power Cable ($39.99). It's a Lightning power cable, which you can plug in to any USB source to power up. It also works as a data sync cable. But what really sets it apart is that the cable has a battery inside it. It looks almost like a python that swallowed a 4-inch battery pack.

That battery pack stores 450 mAh of battery life, which adds about 20 to 30 percent of battery life, so it's not a battery doubler, but it's a great way to have extra battery life without adding much bulk to your gadget bag. After all, you probably need to travel with a Lightning cable anyway. It could be a good cable for the car, as it would charge itself and your iPhone while driving, and give you the option of taking it with you for a little extra juice.

Jackery

Given the feature set, I was surprised to find it to be quite affordable. At $20, you'd spend that much or more for an official cable. I hope to get my hands on a review unit to test the durability and compatibility with rugged cases. Oh, and there's a cute video here.

Pros

  • Serves as a data and power cable
  • Adds 450 mAh of battery life
  • Quite affordable

Cons

  • Only 20–30 percent more battery life
  • One color

Final Verdict

If you find you need to carry a battery pack and a USB cable, consider getting both with the Jewel 2-in-1 Lightning Power Cable from Jackery.
