Review: If You Don't Mind Looking Goofy, Clip-A-Phone Is a Cheap GoPro Alternative

If You Don't Mind Looking Goofy, Clip-A-Phone Is a Cheap GoPro Alternative

When I attend CES, I am always on the lookout for "low-tech" and "no-tech" accessories that make our technological products better. A great example from this year's CES was Clip-A-Phone ($19.99). Rather than spend $300 or more for a dedicated GoPro action camera, the makers of Clip-A-Phone recognize that your iPhone already has a great camera built in so why not leverage that and find a a place to mount your phone. They achieved this with a baseball hat-brim attachment that holds any smartphone that is 3 to 4 inches wide.

I suppose it looks kind of goofy, but what's important is what your phone records and not how you look. Once in place, you will forget about your phone and you can record everything you see. Clip-A-Phone  offers a free app, although there's nothing stopping you from using any videography app. What I found particularly surprising is the $19.99 price includes a Bluetooth remote shutter, which often sells for $20 or more by itself. Bonus points for the Clip-A-Phone being made in U.S.A. (although the Bluetooth remote and lanyard are made in China.)

Pros

  • Very affordable
  • Works with most smartphones and hats
  • Includes Bluetooth shutter remote and free app
  • Made in America
  • Edit videos on the device that records them

Cons

  • No viewfinder access
  • Remote made in China, requires CR-2032 battery

Final Verdict

You don't have viewfinder access but in many ways, the Clip-A-Phone is a superior solution to a GoPro because you can edit videos directly on the device that records them.
