Review: House of Marley's Legend ANC Over-Ear Headphone

House of Marley's eco-friendly Legend ANC headphones ($279.99) are a perfect example of what can happen when practical functionality meets classical and elegant design aesthetics. Created by the collective efforts of Bob Marley's offspring and inspired by their father's "One Love" ethos, the Legend ANC serve as testimony to the fact that a sustainable approach of working with recycled materials can yield an amazing product in every respect, without sacrificing quality.

Like almost all of House of Marley's products, the new Legend ANC headphones incorporate FSC-certified wood and recycled metals and polymers. A collapsible frame makes these headphones ideal for travel, and the cushions used in their construction are some of the most comfortable I've ever felt on a House of Marley product. And unlike the majority of other over-ear headphones on the market, a nice bonus of the Legend ANC, and one that goes a long way towards making these headphones ideal for long listening sessions, is the extra padding that covers the speaker driver within the ear cup. This allows your ear lobe to rest gently against the plush padding, as opposed to the hard speaker driver.

House of Marley's Legend ANC Headphone [Review]

Another plus to the Legend ANC headphones is that even though they are a larger sized over-ear headphone, they are relatively lightweight; yet another factor that contributes to their consistent comfort, even over long listening sessions.

As you'd probably expect from a family comprised of musicians and audiophiles, the acoustic output of the Legend ANC's large and powerful speaker drivers is nothing short of phenomenal. With a clear and balanced equalization these headphones will definitely satisfy even the pickiest of audio aficionados. As the "ANC" in the name implies, the Legends feature active noise cancellation which mutes outside sounds, allowing you to experience your audio as if you were live in the studio when it was being recorded.

These headphones are well worth the expenditure. In fact, for the quality of design and audio that you get, I'd consider them a sweet deal at their under-300 dollar price point. Additionally, a portion of the profits from the Legend ANC go to charities, so you're not just helping the environment, you are helping people in need.

Pros

  • A beautiful pair of headphones, accented with real wood and premium leather.
  • Top quality sound delivery with crisp highs, rumbling lows and a balanced mid-range.
  • Superior padding on all points where the headphone contacts your head.
  • Active noise cancellation makes you feel alone with your music, even in a crowd.
  • Audio cable features a three-button inline playback control.

Cons

  • The Legend ANC use a unique audio cable with a micro-USB jack on the end where the cable connects to the headphone and a standard 3.5mm jack on the end where the cable connects to your iPhone. All well and good unless you loose or damage your audio cable, in which event, it's much harder to replace than a standard 3.5 mm cable.
  • The ear cups are quite comfy, however they don't have much range of motion to them. They are rather rigid with little flex. Without a gimbaled hinge which allows for a more customized fit, they may not be as comfortable on everyone's head.
