Review: Compact Magnetic Car Mount for Phones without Wireless Charging

I have reviewed a number of car mounts, in particular several that support Qi wireless charging, and it's a pleasure to use them. You just place your phone in the cradle, or close to it, and it snaps into place and starts charging! But if you don't have a Qi-based phone, you could try the iTap 2 Magnetic 2 Dash & Windshield Mount ($29.95), which iOttie sent me to try. I tried to review it on that premise, that I didn't want Qi charging or didn't have a phone that supported it.

The iTap 2 mount is well built, with strong magnets, and has a relatively stylish design with smooth surfaces. I also like that it rotates 360 degrees, for landscape or portrait use. It can be mounted on your windshield, or car dash using the included adhesive plate. Unlike Qi charging models, there are no wires to hide, so that's nice.

The iTap 2 holds your phone in place by magnets and requires the use of a metal plate, which can be attached to a naked phone or case or even inserted between the phone and a slim case. iOttie provides two such plates, a large one and a smaller one. The smaller metal plate is used to avoid interference with a Qi charging coil. If you do use the smaller plate, and place it toward the bottom of the phone, it could impact your ability to use the phone in landscape mode.

  • Well built
  • Stylish design with smooth features
  • Rotates 360 degrees
  • For dash or windshield use
  • Strong magnets

  •  Smaller metal plate to avoid interference with Qi charging
  • Qi users should use their wireless charging models

Final Verdict

For a number of reasons, I'd recommend iOttie's Qi-based car mounts, but if you don't need wireless charging in your car, the iTap Magnetic 2 Dash & Windshield Mount is a good fit.
