Reelcase: The Lanyard for Your iPhone

Do you miss the days of carrying miscellaneous items and keys around your neck or at your belt with a lanyard? I remember being in middle school when that was what every self-respecting nerd carried with them. Truly though, it was the practical use of the item which made it such a hit. The Reelcase ($34.95) brings the classic lanyard idea and hides it with an iPhone case, giving you multiple ways to carry your device without using any hands.

Reelcase is a slim iPhone case with a circular hump on the lower back that houses the 28” retractable nylon lanyard. Just below the hump is a small tab you pull to adjust the lanyard to whichever length works for how you want to carry your iPhone. Since the lanyard extends up to 28” it can be used to carry your iPhone around your wrist, attach it to your belt, you could wear around your neck, and even over the shoulder like a side purse.

My phone easily snapped into the case, and it provides access to all the buttons. Reelcase sent me a prototype but the official Reelcase is now available for order. I could see where those who often carry their iPhone around but don’t also carry a purse or backpack would benefit most from this case. I particularly like the option to wear it around my neck, especially if I’m going to be on my bike this is a great alternative to an armband or having to wear a backpack. My only note for users is to be careful when retracting the lanyard and wearing it around your neck. I also noticed that it doesn’t work best for wearing around your wrist because of the weight of your phone; however, for small tasks it would work but I wouldn’t trust it walking around a park.

Pros:

  • Carry your iPhone hands-free

  • Lightweight nylon lanyard extends 28”; versatility

Cons:

  • Too heavy with iPhone to be worn around wrist for long periods

  • Be careful of retractable snap-back if wearing around neck

Final Verdict:

It’s a single purpose case with many uses and a minimalist design suited best for those who either don’t carry a bag or need to have quick access to their phone hands-free.
