Official Apple Watch Dock Now Available

Apple includes a magnetic charging cable with the Apple Watch, and sells a long and short cable online; but for the longest time, the company left the charging dock market to others. Now Apple has a design of its own. For $79, starting November 20, you can pick up an official Apple Watch Magnetic Charging Dock. It's only available in white (currently) but the fact that Apple spells out the color might indicate more options could be on the way. I imagine owners of the gold Apple Watch might want a matching dock.

The Apple dock differs from all other offerings in that it includes the magnetic charger mechanism, instead of relying on the stock cable, and it is connected to power or a USB port by a Lightning-to-USB cable. It also can be propped up to work in Nightstand Mode, or interestingly, it can lie flat to accommodate watches that do not have a closed loop bracelet.

This is interesting for two reasons. First, by leveraging Lightning, this could be a decent travel companion. You probably travel with a Lightning cable anyway, and this could leverage it and let you leave the official magnetic charging cable at home. But more interesting than that is, when the charging pad lies flat, it could accommodate an iPhone if that phone charged via the same mechanism. It appears that Apple is using the Qi standard, even though it doesn't officially say so. If the next iPhone embraces Qi wireless charging, then this new stand could do double duty for watches and iPhones.
