iPhone 7 Rumors: It Has Begun

While the majority of people are still debating whether or not to upgrade to an iPhone 6s, the Internet is already abuzz with rumors for the new iPhone 7. Speculators seem to agree that the next iPhone will be even thinner meaning we’ll probably be buying special headphones for iPhones in the near future. There’s also talk of a waterproof design, iPhone sans Home button, wireless charging, and a wraparound screen. Hear, hear! Let the rumors begin.

Too Thin for the Headphone Jack

We buy everything else specifically for the iPhone, why not our headphones too? This rumor centers around two factors: Ming-Chi Kuo, who is considered the world’s best Apple analyst according to CultofMac, reported that the newest iPhone won’t be thicker than 6.5mm. The current iPhone 6s is 7.1mm. This means the headphone jack has got to change. Apple filed a patent for a D-shaped headphone jack, adding fuel to this rumor’s fire. Yet another source predicts Apple will ditch the audio jack all together and require Bluetooth connected headphones, but that seems like a stretch to me.

No Home Button

I constantly see the rumor that the iPhone 7 won’t have a Home button. Designers have put together concept videos to illustrate what this might look like; however, it remains a rumor I’m not totally convinced by...unless Apple introduces a wrap-around screen.

Wraparound Screen

Apple filed a patent in September for “sidewall displays.” The patent states that the popular flat screen form leaves a lot of unused surface area, “a need for an improved form factor for portable electronic devices which allows functionality to extend to more than one surface of the device.” Now, this is a rumor I can get on board with, but mostly because I think it would look really cool. The future is calling, and I see wraparound screens.

Waterproof

The iPhone 6s and 6s Plus are definitely more water resistant, but I wouldn’t take it swimming. A waterproof iPhone 7 is a fairly consistent rumor made very plausible by the secret water resistance of the current model which includes silicone seals around the logic board and a wider ‘lip’ around the frame.

Wireless Charging

Many of Apple’s competitors have already implemented wireless charging, but those companies were able to do that because the devices are made of plastic. However, the technology for charging through aluminum is now available thanks to Qualcomm, and I’d be surprised if Apple didn’t utilize the technology.

There’s also a rumor that Apple will (finally) phase out the 16 GB model in favor of the 32 GB for the base option. All I have to say, is it’s about time.
