iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus Release Dates and Availability Options

Now that the iPhone 7 has been unveiled in all its shiny new Jet Black glory you’re probably wondering when you can get your hands on one. After Apple announced a slew of new features, design elements, and upgrades, the iPhone 7 is no doubt the most desirable new piece of technology in the world right now. For those of you who are looking to upgrade or buy a new iPhone 7 or iPhone 7Plus, as always, there is good news and bad news.

Let’s start with the bad news: there’s still a bit of waiting to be done. Not a lot of waiting, but some waiting nonetheless. As in releases past, today Apple gave us a detailed timeline of when we can expect to get our hands on the new iPhone 7 and 7 Plus models as well as the new Apple Watch Series 2 and the matching OS for both, iOS 10 and watchOS 3.

If you were not able to watch the launch on September 7 you might not know that the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus come in a variety of new colors. We can’t talk about availability without discussing the color choices. We were introduced to two new “black” options; Jet Black and Black are actually quite different. Jet Black is perhaps the most sleek looking iPhone ever. A special anodization process creates an amazing mirror-like finish that sets this color option apart from the others. It’s set so far apart, in fact, that the Jet Black color model only comes in the 128 GB and 256 GB storage sizes. Black on the other hand is more of a muted and brushed metal looking color but is new nonetheless.

iPhone 7 Lineup

In addition to the new Black and Jet Black color options the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus come in Gold, Rose Gold, and Silver. All of the color options, with the exception of Jet Black, have been updated with new storage sizes. The 16 GB model has been phased out; starting with iPhone 7, 7 Plus and retrograding to the 6s and 6s Plus models as well, the smallest available storage option will be 32 GB. This is the widest array of customization options we’ve seen for any iPhone to date. Not only do you have a choice between five colors, three sizes, and two phone models, you also have the option to add a slew of new accessories that have been designed to work flawlessly with the new system.

Apple Upgrade program

For those of you who are part of the Apple Upgrade Program and for anyone who might now be wondering how that works, your $34 (give or take) fee each month means that you can be part of the madness on September 9 when pre-orders take place. This is going to be a limited release that begins at 12:01 am PDT. With the Apple Upgrade Program, you can upgrade to the latest iPhone every year. According to the Apple website, “With the iPhone Upgrade Program, you can spread the cost of iPhone over 24 months. But you can also upgrade to a new iPhone after just six months, if you’ve made at least 12 payments. Just trade in your current iPhone and start a new plan. It’s that easy.” The program is simple and it makes getting the new iPhone easier than ever.

If you’re not part of the Apple Upgrade Program, there’s no need to worry. The pre-order that beings at 12:01 a.m. PDT this Friday, September 9, is open to everyone. If you miss out during the pre-order, the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus will be available starting on September 16. One of the things that was most shocking was the lack of a price increase. In years past each new iPhone has come with a bigger and better price tag. The iPhone 7 has a price tag that matches the iPhone 6s that it replaces; at just $649 it works out to $27 per month on most installment plans. The iPhone 7 Plus in turn starts at $769 or $32 per month on typical installment plans.

As for the new Apple operating system, iOS 10, the roll out will begin on September 13 for anyone who does not have access to the Beta program, which has made the new iOS available to users for testing. There were several big bombshells dropped during the launch, but one in particular will likely thrill old and new users alike is that we will soon see Super Mario Run in the app store! The nostalgic factor alone made this announcement a big deal for iPhone users. iOS 10 will include the ability for users to download a new app from Nintendo that puts Mario in  your pocket for the first time ever.

In addition, Apple launched a new version of their EarPods called “AirPods” which will be available in late October for $159. These new wireless headphones are interactive, microphone capable, and Siri enabled. They’re as advanced as the new iPhone and make a great addition to the new lineup. Anyone who is interested in the new Apple Watch, called “Watch Series 2,” can  rest easy knowing that they can place one combined order on release days. Like the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus, pre-orders will begin on September 9, Watch Series 2 will be available for sale on the 16th and the new WatchOS is dropping on the 13 at the same time as iOS 10.
