Half-Price Apple Music Plan Now Available for College Students

We recently wrote about pending interface changes to Apple Music coming as part of Apple's effort to attract more users. Now the company has launched a student discount that should help that effort. Many competitors, such as Spotify, already offer discounted plans for students. Keep in mind that Apple is restricting its half-price plan to currently enrolled college students and students are limited to a 48-month term. However, the term doesn't have to be continuous in the case of taking a semester off, etc. Students can also take advantage of the three-month free trial, so the timing is just about right for freshman who will be starting in August or September. They can use the trial over the summer and then start paying the reduced rate.

Unlike Apple's education discounts for the online Apple Store, the Apple Music discount for students does not rely on the honor system. Students will have to prove eligibility, initially and periodically throughout the term. Still, it's a wise move by Apple, and for consumers. $9.99 per month for yet another subscription (in addition to Netflix, Hulu, and who knows what else kids subscribe to these days) might be one too many. But at $4.99 per month for access to such a large library of music, and access to Apple's radio stations with expert DJs, is a fair price.
