Forthcoming 9.7-Inch iPad to Be iPad Pro; 4-Inch iPhone to Be Called iPhone SE

Rumors about Apple's forthcoming March event are rampant, with the biggest news being related to the 9.7-inch iPad that everyone is expecting. According to 9To5Mac, it will not be an iPad Air 3 but instead will be a smaller version of the iPad Pro. It will reportedly be virtually identical to the larger iPad in every way except for size. That includes features such as quad stereo speakers, the Smart Connector, and the A9x chip. 9To5Mac usually has pretty solid information, so this rumor is indeed credible. They say that it's likely that the Apple Pencil and Smart Keyboard will also be available for this new iPad.

And what about the price? Apparently it will come in at the same price point as the iPad Air 2 has been selling for, suggesting that that model will come down in price. 9To5Mac says it's likely the iPad mini 2, which is still being sold, and the first-generation iPad Air will be discontinued, as Apple simplifies its iPad lineup.

The website Seeking Alpha suggests that in the face of declining iPad sales over the past year, Apple is hewing to the market trend toward tablets that double as laptops. Part of the reason for declining tablet sales, they suggest, is the advent of larger phones, or "phablets."

Another recent rumor, courtesy of AppleInsider, is that the date of the event has been pushed back a week to March 22. Also, rumors are now suggesting that the 4-inch iPhone to be introduced at the event will be named iPhone SE. 9To5Mac says it will cost $400-$500 and have a 12-megapixel camera. The price of the iPhone 5s is expected to drop by 50%, to around $250.

This is all good news. An iPad Pro mini at the same price as an iPad Air sounds like a winner. And Apple is going to have some attractive low-cost phones that will appeal to emerging markets.
