Cubii Will Keep You Moving Throughout the Work Day [Review]

By now we’ve all heard the phrase, sitting is the new smoking. Turns out that sitting in front a computer screen for eight hours a day isn’t ideal for the human body. Yet we’ve all got to make our livings. Since the study, walking 10,000 steps a day has become a goal for many. But what if you could get those steps by while you’re still at work? Cubii ($347) is the first smart elliptical for beneath your desk. With the Cubii app, you can track your calories burned, strides taken, and miles biked while you’re working in the office.

It’s incredibly important to our health that we get movement throughout the day. But let’s face it, most office jobs simply don’t allow for that. However, if that resonates with you, Cubii could be a great solution. I have mine placed under my desk. It has a micro USB charging port in the back, so I keep it plugged in all the time so that it never runs out of charge. Cubii connects to your smartphone via Bluetooth and updates every few minutes to show your progress as you bike and work.

Cubii has multiple different levels of resistance. However, in order to track the varying degrees of resistance, you need to manually change the resistance on the Cubii elliptical and then change it in the app as well. That way, your calories burned will take the added resistance into account. The resistance scale goes from one to eight. While working, I found three to be the right amount of resistance for me. This allowed me to continually peddle without being distracted by the movement.

Cubii is heavy enough that you’d want to take it to work and leave it at work, but light enough to be shared around the office with coworkers now and again. I found it was really nice to have Cubii around three o’clock in the afternoon, right when the afternoon slump makes me both tired and antsy. Since I mostly write, I found there were moments when my full concentration needed to be on what I was saying without the distraction of movement. However, for other parts of my job, such as scheduling social media, I found the Cubii to be the perfect extra activity. Whether or not the movement would add to your productivity or distract from it can only be determined by you. But for those of us concerned we aren’t moving nearly enough throughout our days, it’s worth the small investment in our health. It may not seem like much, but simply keeping your legs moving and blood pumping makes a big difference overall.

Pros:

  • Improve health by moving throughout work day
  • Fits under desk very well, easy to use
  • Great when feeling antsy or in need of some movement.
  • Cubii app with metrics of your daily workout

Cons:

  • Have to adjust resistance on both Cubii and within the app for it to track correctly.
  • Not easily portable, would be best to leave at work.

Final Verdict:

I love products like this. I love smart solutions to modern problems we’ve created for ourselves. For someone who works at a computer eight hours a day, Cubii could be a great assistant in improving your health and how you feel at the end of a long day. If you’re concerned about sitting being the new smoking, definitely give Cubii a try.
