CES 2016: 4 of the Best Rugged iPad and iPhone Accessories

CES 2016 is here, and this year's new crop of rugged iPhone and iPad accessories are on display. Geared toward folks with an active lifestyle (or just a tendency to be exceedingly rough on stuff), the following items are from some of the most popular and reputable brands—ones already highly regarded for developing thoroughly tested, high-performance extreme-duty products.

Lifeproof Frē Power Waterproof Battery Case for the iPhone 6 Plus/6s Plus ($149.95)

ios 12 guide - a step-by-step guide to all the new features

Who says iPhone 6 Plus owners don't play hard? Not I, that's for sure! As a happy owner of the largest member of the iPhone family, I can attest to the fact that there are many owners of the 5.5-inch screened iPhone who have been longing for more love from the popular rugged iPhone case manufactures. The new Lifeproof Frē Power for the 6 Plus/6s Plus is the perfect rugged iPhone 6s Plus case for anyone who likes to adventure, or anyone who knows that they can be rough on their iPhone, offering superior protection from all of the elements in a sturdy, yet slim form factor. And with its built-in 3,200 mAh battery, you double the battery capacity of the iPhone 6 s Plus. Considering the battery life of the iPhone 6 Plus is already impressive , I'd say that's a lot of juice for even the most power hungry of power uses!

Griffin's Survivor Backpack ($225.99) and Briefcase ($189.99)

Anything toting the Griffin Survivor name is going to be built tough and offer a high level of protection from impact and the elements. Sure enough, the new Survivor Backpack and Survivor Briefcase are all that. The new Survivor bags are designed to protect your laptops, tablets, and tech gear from drops and crushing forces as well as rain and inadvertent splashes, all while meeting TSA-compliance standards. These bags are both stylish and practical, with beautifully crafted exteriors that would be at home in any professional setting and ruggedly  reinforced main compartments surrounded by an internal shatter-resistant plastic shell. This internal shell, combined with a high-density foam padding used to cushion and support your devices, makes these new bags from Griffin some of the best protective iPad bags on the market.

Braven BRV-XXL ($349.99) and BRV-BLADE LE ($199.99) Bluetooth Speakers

Braven has updated its lineup of renowned rugged portable Bluetooth speakers with the Braven XXL portable mega speaker and the smaller, even more portable Blade LE. While these speakers come in different sizes and fit different purposes, both offer Braven's trademarked high-quality sound and heavy-duty, adventure-ready construction and design. These waterproof Bluetooth speakers are also shock proof and fully sealed from sand and dirt. The larger BRV-XXL comes with a 15,600 mAh internal battery capable of providing both earsplitting, high-decibel sound, as well as the ability to fully recharge your devices. The smaller BRV-BLADE LE, with its 4,000 mAh internal battery, is plenty loud in its own right—loud enough to be heard over the crashing surf or the rumble of an ATV engine. Both of these speakers also include a microphone for phone calls or FaceTime.

Otterbox Defender for iPad Pro ($97.46)

The iPad Pro is a pretty darn amazing device; but when I look at it, all I see is one huge liability. I drop my large iPhone 6 Plus often (one reason why I always use a rugged, protective case) and likewise, my iPad mini always seems to find its way crashing down to the ground. So I can only imagine how I'd fare with the largest, heaviest iPad with its huge glass touchscreen. Enter the Defender iPad Pro case. With its multiple layers of shock-absorbing goodness and a built-in, clear screen protector, this case is your best bet for protection from the bumps and bruises of day-to-day life. If you have the iPad Pro and want to keep it safe and secure, even if it takes a fall from your desk or countertop to the tile floor, then the Defender iPad Pro case may indeed be your best bet. It also comes with an ultra-protective, clip-on hard plastic screen cover that doubles as a viewing stand and has a tiny slot to safely stash your Apple Pencil. The new iPad Pro Defender is now available in black and I expect more color options to be not far off.
