Apple Watch Outsells All Its Competitors, Combined

Apple Watch Outsells All Its Competitors, Combined

Juniper Research has released a report with good news for Apple. According to the report's Apple Watch sales estimates, in the short time the Apple Watch has been available (since April 2015) it has garnered the majority position in the smartwatch market. In fact, the report states the Apple Watch has a market share of 52 percent, which is more than the rest of the market combined. This is also significant because the Apple Watch has a higher price tag than competitors, which means Apple's revenue in the smartwatch marketplace is even higher than 52 percent and probably much higher given the cost of the more expensive models and the accessories Apple sells for the Apple Watch.

Another reason this is significant is that Android phones outsell Apple iPhones, largely because of the volume and variety of devices, often with features Apple hasn't yet offered (like wireless charging and waterproof capabilities) and low cost. Given that lower-cost Android Wear watches are available, and were available before the Apple Watch, the fact that the Apple Watch outsells them shows that Android consumers aren't necessarily interested in spending $200 or more for a smartwatch, whereas Apple's consumers are.

The report is also good news for Apple Watch app developers. With a clear leader, and a growing installed base, it makes writing apps for the device attractive. Now that apps can run natively, they can be even more powerful and operate independently from an iPhone. As such apps become available, the value of an Apple Watch increases, and the numbers should only get better, for Apple and Apple Watch app developers.
