Apple TV Software Update Brings Support for Siri Music Search and iOS Remote App

Apple TV Software Update Brings Suport for Siri Music Search and iOS Remote App

On Tuesday, Apple released tvOS 9.1 for the Apple TV, and it's a very welcome update for users of the new device. It now offers the ability to use Siri to control Apple Music on Apple TV, as well as offering support for Apple's remote app. One of the biggest criticisms of the new box was the tedium of entering log in credentials or searching for apps by using the TV's onscreen keyboard via the Apple TV's remote. Now one can use the more convenient virtual keyboard on an iPhone or iPad.

To update to tvOS 9.1, go to Settings > System > Software Updates and select Update Software. You'll then be asked if you want to download and install the Apple TV software now or later. Click Download and Install, and the new version will be downloaded. You'll then be asked if you want to install it now or later.

To use the Remote app, you'll need to pair it with your Apple TV. First open the app and go to Settings. Select Add an iTunes Library. You'll then be given a code which you'll enter into the Settings on your Apple TV. On your Apple TV go to Settings > Remotes and Devices > Remote App. Select your device and then enter the code. You'll need to have Home Sharing enabled in the Remote app settings and in the Apple TV settings.

(Note that the Remote app currently gives incorrect instructions for navigating the menu on the Apple TV, using an older menu structure.)

These are welcome developments. It's great to simply be able to ask my Apple TV to play some Rimsky-Korsakov, and then it begins playing some of my favorite symphonic music.

I tried to pair my Bluetooth keyboard with my Apple TV but without luck. Apparently this feature will be coming soon but isn't yet available.
