What to Expect from Apple's Sept. 12 iPhone Announcement: New iPhones, Apple Watch Series 4, AirPods 2 & Studio Pods

Apple just sent out press invitations for the annual September event, so we now have an official date to look forward to; the action starts at 10 a.m. PT on Wednesday, September 12, at the Steve Jobs Theater in Cupertino, California. We've been anticipating this day, and the device announcements that will come with it, for months, so let's go over all the hints, rumors, and educated guesses about potential new products Apple might announce, including new iPhones, the Apple Watch Series 4, AirPods 2, and StudioPods.

Three New iPhones

Rumor has it that three new iPhones will be revealed at the September 12 event, but no one knows what they'll be called, or what their specific features will include. We've consistently heard, however, that all three devices will include edge-to-edge displays, extended battery life, TruDepth Cameras with facial recognition capability, more powerful, faster processors, and for at least one of the phones, an OLED display. As well, all three iPhones are expected to have larger display sizes, in part because of their edge-to-edge displays, but also because the chassis of the devices themselves will be bigger. The largest of the new iPhones is rumored to have a 6.5-inch screen!

One further rumor that I'm very interested in confirming; 3D Touch on all new iPhones may be removed. Whether we'll have to return to using long presses or whether 3D Touch will be replaced by something completely different such as touchless gestures (already available on the Samsung Galaxy S4) remains to be seen.

What will the new iPhones be called? Again, this remains to be seen, but I'm fairly certain we'll see an iPhone X Plus, and it's even possible that all three devices will be iterations of the iPhone X.

Apple Watch Series 4 Rumors

Watch OS 5 is slated for release in September, so top analysts have been predicting that the Apple Watch Series 4 can't be far behind. Among the changes and improvements we're anticipating are a display enlarged up to 15 percent and with a possible new shape. Will it be round? Possibly... the media invitation to the September 12th event features this image:

Of course, Apple's Cupertino Campus, dubbed The Spaceship, is round, so the invitation image could just be a nod to the location of the event. It could even be a reference to the rumored StudioPods. A completely new form factor for the Apple Watch Series 4 seems unlikely.

Other possible new Apple Watch features we've heard rumors about include a smart band with watch components incorporated into it: biometric sensors, haptic feedback devices, speakers, and extra batteries or kinetic power generators; all plausible innovations. A faster processor is a must for the next Apple Watch as well, but no one knows how much quicker the Series 4 will be until the upcoming announcement. New health-monitoring capabilities, extended battery life, and the long-awaited fully waterproof Apple Watch round out the rumors for what Apple might announce with the Series 4.

AirPods 2

Apple's AirPods have been wildly popular, and rumors have been going around for some time that this September's special event will include an AirPods 2 announcement. Lately, though, there's been speculation that the second generation AirPods will be delayed until 2019 because the original version is still selling extremely well. Whether or not the AirPods 2 are announced in September or at a future event, we anticipate that they'll incorporate a hands-free Siri function, an upgraded wireless chip, remote microphone capabilities, as well as a Live Listen hearing aid syncing feature, more water resistance, and hopefully, more color options.

The wireless AirPods charging case we've been hearing about for some time still seems slated for the September announcement, since the accessory meshes so well with the long-anticipated AirPower wireless charging mat.

A high quality, over-ear headset that can be fully integrated with other Apple devices and has hands-free Siri functionality? We've been hearing more and more rumors about StudioPods features, including wireless charging but the more snippets of information we receive, the further into the future the rumored announcement date recedes. We won't know for sure until September 12, but it now appears that Apple is willing to wait on an official announcement in favor of making the StudioPods release as wildly successful as the AirPods debut.

What Are You Hoping Apple Will Announce at the Event?

I'm excited for the Apple Watch Series 4 announcement on the 12th. This is the year I'm going to buy an Apple Watch if most of the rumored features are included! What are you hoping will be revealed, and what features are most important to you?
