Review: Split App for iOS Safari

One issue I have with iDevices is the inability to multi-task and have two apps open at once. It really helps to have two screens open, especially when working quickly from your phone.

Split ($0.99) can help with this problem. Just open the app and type in your webpage. The app works horizontally and vertically, allowing the user to have a stacked or side-by-side experience.

The app is easy to set up. Just open it and type in your webpage address. To add more pages, pull the screen to the right or left to add different web pages. To open the webpage in the native Safari app on your iPhone, tap the small Safari icon in the middle/bottom of the screen.

At first, the navigation was a little confusing. Once you start tapping buttons, you can get lost easily. Just remember that pulling the screen to the right edits the top browser, while pulling to the left edits the bottom browser. If you have it turned to landscape mode, this is more intuitive.

As of now, there are no alternatives to this, unless you have a jailbroken iPhone/iPad. I’ve never jailbroken an iDevice, and I’m not suggesting you do so. I do know it invalidates your Apple warranty, so be cautious.

Pros:

  • Simplicity: this app does one thing: It provides a split screen experience. Sometimes, when trying to stay productive, that's all you need. Open the app, type in your webpage, and browse! It’s that simple. It’s an easy way to stay productive when mobile.

Cons:

  • iOS 9: there have been whispers of split screen capability since before iOS 8 was announced, so will iOS 9 have this option? Conceivably, this will not just be for browsers, but for apps as well. Will the split screen come from Apple to Safari browsers? If so, it will completely invalidate this app.
  • Simplicity: earlier versions of the app promotional videos showed there would be a calculator, or other options, available to use in the split screen. However, that didn't make it to the app launch because those features didn't pass the app review process. Again, this would be a moot point if iOS 9 introduces multitasking.

Final Verdict:

It’s simple. It works. It’s pretty straightforward. If you do a lot of browsing via mobile and end up switching between windows a lot, download the app. It’s sure to keep you productive!

iPhone Life Verdict:  3 out of 5 stars
