iOS 7 Tips & Tricks: Mail

Our iPhones and iPads are capable of amazing things, but most of us only use a small percentage of their abilities. In this weekly column I share tips and tricks for beginners, or anyone who wants to harness the full power of their iDevice. This week, I'm going to give you some tips for Mail in iOS 7.

1. Specifying Short Names

Are there times you wish you could simplify your contact names? For example, instead of showing your aunt's first and last name in your contact list, the new Short Name feature in iOS 7 allows you to use nicknames. So now, Aunt Betty will show up as "Aunt Betty." To do this, go to Settings>Mail, Contacts, Calendars>Contacts and specify how you want your contacts shown, by first name and last initial, first initial and last name, first or last name only, or as a nickname.

2. Search Emails

What if you want to limit your search to just the current mailbox instead of all of your email? At the top of the search results list, you’ll see tabs for All Mailboxes and Current Mailbox. Tap the latter to limit the search.

3. Undo Actions

Have you ever read an email and then sent it to the trash by accident? iOS 7 has a cool way to undo this. Shake your device and then you will see a choice on your screen to Undo Trash. Same goes for if you file an email into a wrong folder by mistake.

4. Swipe to Switch

Another way to delete or move a message out of your inbox and into a file is to swipe left on the message. Choose More and you'll be able to choose to Reply, Forward, Flag/Unflag, Mark As Unread/Read, Move to Junk, and Move Message. You can do this even without opening the email.
