Seniors Use Mobile Devices More Than You Think (Infographic)

This infographic takes a look at the fastest growing demographic using the Internet, which happens to be adults 50+! It’s official: baby boomers and seniors have caught on to the mobile times, and now make up a large share of Americans who use smartphones, tablet, the Internet, and social media.

Here are some of the facts I found most striking:

  • Internet Use: More than 50 percent of all Internet users are more than 65 years old;
  • Social Media Use: In the 65+ age group, 34 percent of all Internet users also use social networking sites. In the 50-64 age group, half participate in social networks;
  • Tablets appear to be the mobile device of choice for older Americans. In fact, 34.7 percent of tablet users are 45 or older. In the 75+ age group, only 3 percent of mobile users own a smartphone, a drastic tapering off compared to younger age groups. The same did not hold true for tablets, with 52 percent of mobile users 75+ owning a tablet.

I can’t say I’m surprised by this news: I know my grandma has been texting for years, and even bought herself an iPad for Christmas to add to her collection of mobile gadgets.
