iPhone Life's Top 5 Medium-Duty Cases for the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.

With summer practically here I figured, what better time to write about some great iPhone cases to keep your iPhone safe on summer adventures. The following roundup features some of the best medium-duty iPhone cases, ones specifically designed to keep your iPhones secure, without hiding the inherent beauty of the device.

Over my years of writing for iPhone Life I've devoted a lot of attention to rugged gearaccessories for our iOS devices that are built for extreme conditions and circumstances. But not everyone who wants a reliably protective iPhone case wants one of those full-body, armor-style cases. When it comes to heavy-duty protective cases for our iPhones, we often have to contend with the fact that many of the available options are both bulky and limit our access to certain features of our iPhones.

If a heavy-duty iPhone case seems a little over protective to you, but you'd still appreciate a case that provides solid protection from everyday abuse, a medium-duty case might be just what the doctor ordered. A medium-duty case is a case that can protect from  most impact and shocks and will prevent scratches to the body, but won't necessarily offer protection from water or dust intrusion. Although medium-duty cases may come with an optional plastic adhesive screen protector, they usually won't have built-in, full screen protection like something by Catalyst or Lifeproof. Medium-duty cases also tend to be significantly less expensive than their heavier-duty counterparts.

To help you decide which is right for you, I've put together a short list of great options for medium-duty rugged cases for the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus. Unless otherwise mentioned, all of the following cases are available for both iPhone 6 and 6 Plus models.

Otterbox Commuter

The Otterbox Commuter ($39.90) offers some of the most extreme protection of any of the medium duty cases. The Commuter has a soft, shock-absorbing inner lining with a rigid and durable exterior. It also has a grippy material on its outer shell that helps avert drops. In the event that you do happen to drop your Commuter-encased iPhone, its dual-layered protection works to provide excellent shock and drop protection. The Commuter is also the only medium-duty case featured here that includes a built-in, transparent plastic screen protector, which serves to keep your iPhone's touchscreen free of scratches and chips and can even help prevent screen cracks.

X-Doria Defense Gear

The X-Doria Defense Gear metal case for the iPhone 6 line of phones employs the incredible strength and durability of aluminum to provide protection to your iPhone from drops and compression forces, while the inner rubber lining of this minimalist case increases its shock absorbency and resilience. It's not the case to use if you want surface scratch protection, but for everyday use, including protection from hard falls, the Defense Gear is more than adequate.

iBattz Mojo Refuel Invictus (iPhone 6 only)

iPhone Life's Top 5 Medium-Duty Cases for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.

The Mojo Refuel Invictus ($99.95) offers comprehensive protection, safeguarding your iPhone 6 from the hazards of daily life with its slim and low-profile design, a design that is all the more impressive when taking into consideration the remarkable boost to battery life it provides. The Refuel Invictus has the added benefit of having a 3,200 mAh battery built into the case, which increases the iPhone's battery life by as much as 120 percent. Unfortunately, due to the iPhone 6 Plus' already impressive battery life, iBattz has yet to introduce a Refuel Invictus model for the largest of iPhone models. As an iPhone 6 Plus owner I can testify that I have, on more than one occasion, managed to totally deplete my battery and would appreciate the reliable convenience of a Refuel Invictus in a 6 Plus model.

UAG Folio

This practical and useful case from Urban Armor Gear ($39.95) incorporates a protective touchscreen folio cover into its design. Along with offering an unrivaled degree of screen protection for your iPhone 6 or 6 Plus, the inside of the folio cover also accommodates up to 3 credit cards (or cash, a key and/or business cards) for convenience and accessibility. The inside of the folio cover feels like soft felt and will definitely keep your iPhone screen scratch free. Furthermore, this case is made by UAG, and with their reputation for making protective gear that can provide protection from a fall from the near reaches of outer space, you know your iPhone is pretty safe in this case.

STM Dux

The STM Dux ($29.95) is a sleek and streamlined affair that offers great protection thanks to its rigid plastic frame and grippy, rubber exterior edges. It is the popular iDevice accessory maker's most rugged iPhone case. The back of the case is clear plastic, allowing you to customize your iPhone 6 with anything from a piece of paper to a photo, or even a piece of fabric. Or, you can just let the pristine elegance of your iPhone shine through. for me, the icing on the cake Dux, is a lanyard attachment point at the lower right corner of the case, that way you can wear your iPhone around your neck, off your wrist, or clipped to your belt or pack, keeping it secure and accounted for.
