Game Centered: Apple's Latest iPhone 6 Commercial is All About Gaming

Video games on iOS are huge right now. In acknowledgement and celebration of this fact, Apple's newest iPhone 6 commercial is all about gaming, specifically a new game entitled Vainglory (free). Vainglory debuted alongside the introduction of the iPhone 6 series of iPhones and was used at the unveiling to demonstrate the prowess of the new iPhone's gaming capabilities, and with good reason! Vainglory has absolutely gorgeous graphics as well as intense and fast-paced, strategic multiplayer gameplay, built from the ground up for iOS.

Vainglory is impressive in and of itself, but even more so when you look at it in the context of the international professional eSport leagues. You see, Vainglory belongs to a genre of mobile games known as MOBA which are arguably some of the most popular and profitable games in the world, with console counterparts awarding millions in prize money to competitors who play in front of millions of people; people who fill stadiums as spectators and who tune in via streaming media sources or ESPN, to watch their favorite players and teams go head to head on the world stage.

For those unfamiliar with the genre, it's something like a fantastical version of a capture-the-flag-themed game. In Vainglory, two teams of three players compete to vanquish opposing enemy heroes, while battling for dominance over Minion Mines and Gold Mines and fighting for control over the mighty Kraken. Ultimately the goal being to destroy the other team's Vain crystal.

The commercial may seem rather funny, with voice acting by Apple spokesmen, Jimmy Fallon and Justin Timberlake, but in actuality the seemingly oddball things that they are talking about in the video are just part of the everyday vernacular for fans of this MOBA. Having spent many hours immersed in the battle for Vainglory's Halcyon Fold, I can completely relate to what they were talking about in the commercial. Furthermore, I was particularly excited to see Apple give this amazing game, which is part of a phenomenal gaming trend within the global eSports community, so much attention and support.

With the introduction of Metal and iOS 8, Apple stands to change the face of modern gaming as we know it yet again, as mobile gaming continues its meteoric rise in both popularity and revenue generated. Apple's Gamers commercial is only further evidence that Apple is well-aware of its unique and perhaps surprising position as a leader and pioneer in the burgeoning modern mobile gaming world, and that they intend to push the envelope of what we thought was possible on iOS by continuing to provide a platform for top quality, console caliber game titles like Vainglory, XCOM: Enemy Within, Asphalt 8: Airborne, and Modern Combat 5: Blackout, to name but a few.
