Apple Skips iPhone Announcement at Its September Event, Breaking Tradition
By Amy Spitzfaden–Both
In a significant break from routine, Apple's 2020 September Special Event did not include an announcement of the 2020 iPhones. Instead, the event focused on the new Apple Watch and iPad models. While the Apple Watch and iPad announcement times vary year by year, this is the first time since 2011 and only the second time ever that the new iPhones were not announced in the September event. The first time was in 2011 when the 4S was announced October 4 and released ten days later. This year's delay is linked to the COVID-19 pandemic, and while we're still waiting on all the most important information regarding the 2020 iPhone announcement and release, let's take a look at what we do know.
MacOS Big Sur Brings Elements of iOS & Next-Level Privacy
By Amy Spitzfaden–Both
One of the biggest announcements Apple made at today's WWDC keynote was its new macOS, which it ambitiously named Big Sur. While it's currently unclear whether the version will be called macOS 10.16 or 11, the name Big Sur encapsulates Apple's goal for the OS, which is to be "entirely new yet instantly familiar." Almost every aspect of the design is new to macOS but borrowed from iOS, from app icons and symbols, to a whole new suite of sounds. The goal is to add consistency across Apple devices. Floating buttons, a new sidebar design, and a space-efficient toolbar are all exciting features of this redesign aimed toward making it easier to access what you need. Arguably the most exciting feature of Big Sur is the new Privacy Report in Safari, which gives you a look at which sites are using (and sharing) your data, as well as keeps tabs on which of your passwords may have been compromised. In an age when data can spread like wildfire, these updates are not only reassuring, but needed.

Will Apple's New iOS 11 Car Safety Features Help Us Help Ourselves?
By Chris Vasques
This year at the World Wide Developer Conference (WWDC) Apple announced some significant changes to the way the iPhone will behave while its user is driving. The new Car Safety features in iOS 11 arrive in response to increased pressure from the National Highway Safety Traffic Administration, which has urged Apple and other cellphone manufacturers to develop safeguards to reduce death and injury attributed to distracted driving. Distracted driving has been an issue in at least some capacity for over 20 years without much response at the developer level. Distraction related accidents, whether involving gadgets or otherwise, killed nearly 3,500 people in 2015, according to the National Highway Safety Traffic Administration, with 391,000 lesser injuries.
10 Answers Siri Has for the Meaning of Life
By Conner Carey
As Siri gets smarter, Siri is becoming increasingly helpful. For instance; no matter where in the world you are, you can ask Siri to call the emergency number from where you live and the AI will dial the local emergency number instead. (That's why you should ignore the people who try to trick you into saying, "Hey Siri, 108." 108 is the emergency services number in India. Saying 108 to Siri is the same as asking the digital assistant to dial 911 or 999 or whatever your local equivelant is.) In addition to being smarter and more helpful with each update, Siri has plenty of witty responses for all kinds of occasions. You can ask Siri to tell you a story, and around Halloween, Siri can give you some very clever costume ideas, including bending time and space to avoid dressing up at all. The AI is witty and has grown increasingly sassy, but how philosophical is Siri? I decided to ask Siri, “what is the meaning life?” Her answers are surprisingly accurate at times and downright hilarious at others.
Starting with iOS 10 on the iPhone, you can subscribe to Publications within Apple News. For example, The Wall Street Journal has a premium subscription only members can view. With iOS 10, you can subscribe to that publication right from within the News app. If you already have a subscription to a publication outside of Apple News, you can log in to that subscription to view that publication’s news in the News app. When this feature was first launched, only a handful of publications took advantage of the option. But I imagine you’ll see it more and more. Here’s how to subscribe to publications in Apple News.
