The more things change, the more they stay the same

It seems that the mobile device wars are really beginning to heat up and all of the players are beginning to make allies and take sides.

Google has a new friend in RIM who has decided to support Android apps for their upcoming Playbook tablet. Today Nokia announced a strategic partnership with Microsoft for Windows Phone 7 development and rumors are swirling about Apple developing cheaper devices for mass appeal. I have my doubts about that last one though.

True Push GMail Arrives on iPhone

image

Push GMail notifications have arrived for the iPhone. While not a true Apple application like we might expect by now, a new App Store application named GPush fills the bill for GMail addicts.

For a mere $.99, you can install GPush and receive notifications when new mail arrives to your GMail account. Of course, if Apple does implement true push notifications in the near future, this app will be short lived. However, for those of you who have been waiting and really, really need to know when email arrives as it arrives, GPush is a simple and affordable solution.

David (Palm) and Goliath (Apple): Goliath Wins!

Palm's strategy for mimicking some of Apple's iPhone features has been a boon to the heralded Pre, which just launched about a month ago. Capacitive touch screen, pinch zooming, and similar specs have made the Pre a serious competitor to the iPhone in many respects. So much so, that I was expecting Apple to sue Palm before the Pre's launch to block them from selling it over Apple's patents.

iPhone 3GS Overheating Issue Resolution

image

I have some news that should resolve the overheating issue that has been plauging a percentage of iPhone 3GS owners since its release.

I personally have not experienced this issue, however I have a very reliable source who claims that they have solved the issue thanks to some internal knowledge of a known issue during production. It apparently has do do with a corrupt software image when the 3.0 OS was flashed onto the devices during production.

iPhone 3.0 Update: Just Hours Away Now

image

The highly anticipated iPhone 3.0 update is just a few hours away according to sources. The expected times are 10 AM Pacific/1 PM Eastern time and will be available via iTunes.

The update is free for all iPhone users. All iPod Touch users will be charged an upgrade fee of $9.99. A worthy update to the platform, the 3.0 update will contain a host of new features and fixes and is the centerpiece to the new iPhone 3G S being released this Friday.

AT&T vs. iPhone Users: The Next Ice Age

image

AT&T is firmly planted as the number two wireless carrier in the United States and there's little reason to believe that will be changing anytime soon. Apple's relationship with AT&T to be the exclusive carrier for the iPhone has been hugely profitable for both companies as well,  however there is a growing rift between Apple, iPhone users and the wireless giant.

iPhone 3GS Turns Palm’s ‘Pre’ To ‘Post’?

image

Today, Apple Computer has announced its successor to the iPhone 3G. The new iPhone will receive an “S” moniker for “Speed” at the end to differentiate it from the 3G model. Many of the new features rumored to be coming did in fact make the cut for the new iPhone such as a 3 megapixel camera with autofocus and a much anticipated video capture mode, a built in compass, voice command capability, and claimed improvements for performance and battery life.

Hotmail Now A Reality For iPhone Users

With Microsoft's recent announcement of POP access to its popular Hotmail email service, iPhone users can finally begin getting their email with the built in client software.

Setting up your Hotmail account is simple on the iPhone since it retrieves all of the correct settings automatically so your email will be up and running in mere minutes.

$99 iPhone Rumor Persists: Could Be Revealed Soon

image

For some months now, rumors have swirled about Apple Computers being poised to take on the low cost phone market by releasing what amounts to a broken iPhone for a mere $99.

If the rumors are to be believed, Apple's new $99 iPhone will sport primarily 2G specifications with some limitations as are indicated on the chart below.

iPhone 2.21 Firmware Release A Worthy Update

image

Yesterday's very quiet release of updated firmware for the iPhone seems to be operating very smoothly. Apple's release of the 2.21 firmware came accross via iTunes as an unexpected update and gave very little information about what "bug fixes" it was referring to about the changes it would perform. Strangely, even Apple's own website shows 2.2 as the current release, not the 2.21 update.
